Historical Description

OTFORD is a village and parish on the river Darenth with a station on the Sevenoaks branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 miles north from Sevenoaks and 22 from London, in the Western division of the county, Codsiheath hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Sevenoaks petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Shoreham, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. A line of railway nearly 15 ½ miles in length between Otford Junction and Maidstone was opened 1 June, 1874, and is now continued to Ashford. The river is crossed by an iron girder bridge erected in 1887 by the highway board. The church of St. Bartholomew is of Kentish ragstone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower with spire, containing a dock and 2 bells; there are various monuments to the Polhill family, and two stained windows: the church affords 388 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials begins with the year 1630; marriages, 1631. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, and held since 1878 by the Rev. John Hunt D.D. of St. Andrew’s University, Scotland. There is a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1800. The poor have about £100 yearly from an ancient charity left by Sir T. Smythe, of Sutton-at-Hone, in this county, and under the control of the Skinners’ Company, of London, which is distributed in various sums and in bread. G. Polhill esq. left in 1893 £500, the interest on which is distributed to poor widows. The kennels of the West Kent Hunt are situated here; W. Baker White esq. master; hunting days, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Farningham, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks are convenient places for hunting visitors. Otford was attached to the see of Canterbury so early as 1006, and the archbishops appear to have had a dwelling-place here from the time of Lanfranc, the first Norman archbishop, A.D. 1070, and to have made it a favourite place of residence; Archbishop Warham rebuilt the castle or palace in a magnificent style, at a cost of £33,000, and entertained Henry VIII. here with splendid hospitality; the existing remains furnish an admirable specimen of brick-work of the time of Henry VII. and include a roofless octagonal tower of three storeys, with double square-headed windows, the chapel, almost intact and in good preservation, and the cloistered side of a court, now formed into cottages. There is a spring of water in the castle grounds which flows into a chamber upwards of 30 feet in length by about 15 in breadth known as St. Thomas A’Becket’s well. Earl Amherst, who is lord of the manor, Francis Bingham Mildmay esq. of 46 Berkeley square, London W. Harry Wellband esq. and Cuthbert A. Morris Field esq. of Ashurst Park, are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, roots, hops and fruit. The area, including Dunton Green, is 2,785 acres of land and 21 of water; assessable value, £13,684; the population in 1901 was, including 927 in Dunton Green, 1,698.

Twitton is 1 mile west.

National School (mixed), the original edifice, near the church, was erected in 1833, but becoming inadequate, schools were built in 1872 on a site further west for 140 children; average attendance, 110.
