Historical Description
OTTERDEN is a village and parish, 3 ½ miles from Lenham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 7 south-west from Faversham, in the Mid division of the county, Eyhorne and Faversham hundreds, Aylesford and Scray lathes, Hollingbourne union, Bearsted petty sessional division, Faversham county court district and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Lawrence is of brick and stone, and contains some fine monuments and brasses to the Lewin, Bunce, St. Leger and Wheler families, some of early date: the church affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £210, with 191 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. C. W. Wheler, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Charles Eveleigh Woodruff M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. Bunce’s benefaction, of which the Leather sellers’ Company are trustees, was left by James Bunce, alderman of London; the yearly income derived from rents is expended: 1. In a certain sum apportioned to the minister for catechizing the young; 2. In repairs every 10 years to the Church; 3. In the yearly distribution to the poor. Otterden Place, an ancient mansion of brick in the Tudor style, stands in the middle of park-like grounds of 100 acres, beautifully wooded; it was here that Stephen Gray, a distinguished physician and natural philosopher, put up his first electric line, in company with the Rev. Granville Wheler, June 14Th 1725; Gray, who published his discoveries in electric conduction and induction between 1720 and 1736, died in the Charter House, London, Feb. 15Th 1736; the house is now the seat of Granville Charles Hastings Wheler esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light loam; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and peas. The area is 1,521 acres; rateable value £1,126.; the population in 1901 was 159.
