Historical Description

PEMBURY is a parish and village, 3 miles north-east from Tunbridge Wells stations on the South Eastern and Chatham and London, Brighton and South Coast railways, 5 south-east from Tonbridge and 30 miles from London, in the South Western division of Aylesford, Tunbridge Wells county court district and petty sessional division, Tonbridge union, rural deanery of South Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Peter is of stone, originally Norman, but now chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower, with spire, containing 3 bells; there are three stained memorial windows, a brass of 1607, and several ancient monuments; in the churchyard is a stone coffin of an abbot of Bayham: the church was restored in 1867—8, and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £290, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of R. Clifford Smith esq. of Ashford Hall, Bakewell, Derbysh. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Henry Sinclair Brooke M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. St. Peter’s chapel of ease, erected at a cost of about £2,500, is in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower, with spire, containing one bell. There is a Nonconformist Union chapel at Lower Green, rebuilt and enlarged in 1886, and has 200 sittings, and a Wesleyan chapel in the Hastings road. There are two working men’s clubs and reading rooms. A new church institute and club is now (1902) in course of erection at Lower Green, at an estimated cost of up wards of £600. The principal hotel is the Camden. Here is a reservoir, with pumping station attached, for supplying Tunbridge Wells with water; it covers 7 ¾ acres, and is fed by springs, the water from which is conveyed through huge pipes from the surrounding neighbourhood. The hospital of the Tonbridge Rural District Council, erected in 1887, for the treatment of all infectious diseases, stands in this parish, and is available for 16 inmates. At one end of the village is a row of almshouses, built in 1716 by the late Charles Amherst esq. of Bayhall, for six aged persons, who are nominated by the Marquess Camden; each inmate is allowed 17s. 4d. a month Kenward, the seat of Sir John Charles Kenward Shaw bart. J.P. stands on an eminence, having some fine picturesque scenery; the grounds extends to 100 acres. Grovehurst is the seat of Mrs. Fereday-Smith; Hawkwell Place, the property of the Rev. R. S. Tabor M.A. is the residence of William Mewburn esq.; Knight’s Place, of Mrs. Finch; Oakleigh, of Mrs. Hogg; Hazledene, of Mrs. Greaves, Pembury Court, of Boughton Addy esq. and Pembury Hall is the residence of the Rev. Reginald Stephen Shaw Woodgate, vicar here 1878—89. The Marquess Camden and Rev. R. S. Tabor M.A. of 64 St. George’s square, London S.W. are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is sand and loam; subsoil, sand, clay and rock. The chief crops are hops, barley and turnips. The area is 3,638 acres of land, with a considerable portion of woods, and 12 of water; rateable value, £11,497; the population in 1901 was 1,545.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 18 March, 1872; Alfred Thomas Simpson, 21 & 23 Church road, Tunbridge Wells, clerk to the board; George Vennell, attendance officer.
