Historical Description

Penshurst, the far-famed residence of the Sidneys for two centuries, is situated five miles from Tunbridge Wells, on the northwest. This noble and ancient mansion is celebrated for having been the birthplace of the gallant and learned Sir Philip Sidney, who fell at the battle of Zutphen, in the thirty-fifth year of his age; and also of that sturdy patriot, Algernon Sidney, who was beheaded in the year 1683.

Penshurst Place still remains in the Sidney family. It contains a noble collection of pictures. The park is of great extent, and charmingly diversified with hill and dale, woods and lawns." Here mighty Dudley once would rove, To plan his triumphs in the grove; Here looser Waller, ever gay, With Sacharissa in dalliance lay; And Philips, sidelong yonder spring, His lavish carols wont to sing." Penshurst, a Poem.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PENSHURST is a parish, and village, situated at the confluence of the river Eden with the Medway, with a station 2 miles from the village on the Reigate and Tonbridge section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 36 ¼ miles from London, 6 ½ north-west from Tunbridge Wells and 5 ½ south-west from Tonbridge, in the South Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, hundreds of Somerden and Washlingstone, petty sessional division and county court district of Tonbridge, union of Sevenoaks, rural deanery of Tonbridge and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. John the Baptist is of stone, chiefly in the Late Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells; the south chancel aisle, the mortuary chapel of the Sidneys, was restored by Lord de L’Isle and Dudley in 1856: under the chapel are interred the remains of Algernon Sidney, beheaded on Tower Hill, 7th December, 1683: there are also numerous tombs, monuments and brasses to the Sidney, Hardinge, Bullen, Iden and other families; the chancel screen is a memorial to Charles, 2nd Viscount Hardinge, d. 1894, and several stained windows: the church has been restored and affords about 500 sittings. The register dates from about the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, with residence and 38 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord De L’Isle and Dudley, and held since 1878 by the Rev. George Maberly Smith M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Canterbury, and rural dean of Tonbridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Pounds Bridge, and a Congregational chapel, erected in 1866, at Smart’s Hill. The Village Hall and Club, built in 1900, at a cost of £4,000 by Arnold F.
