Historical Description

PETHAM is a parish and village, in a wild region, surrounded by chalk hills, at the bottom of Chartham Down, the western boundary being woodland, while to the east runs the Stone Street way from Canterbury to Hythe; it is 3 ½ miles south-east from Chartham station on the Ashford and Margate section of the South-Eastern and Chatham railway, and 5 south from Canterbury, in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, union and hundred of Bridge and Petham, Home petty sessional division, Canterbury county court district, and in the rural deanery of West Bridge and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of All Saints is of flint and chalk, in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, annexed in 1698 to the vicarage of Waltham, joint net yearly value £280, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir John William Honywood bart. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Frederick William Gilbert Sidebotham M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The poor participate with the parishes of Upper and Lower Hardres in Tillard’s charity of £90 yearly, consisting of £3.000 in New £3 per Cent. Consols, left in 1827 by James Tillard, of Street End; they also have £3 from Strong’s charm In the parish are remains of entrenchments. Kenfield Hall, now occupied by W. H. C. Wilson esq. is one mile north; Petham House is the residence of Henry Ramsay Mackay esq. Lieut.-Col. Samuel John Thomson C.I.E., M.R.C.S.Eng, who is lord of the manor, H. R. Mackay esq. Mrs. Blake and T. Pilcher esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops. The area is 3,338 acres; assessable value, 3,018; the population in 1901 was 606.

Wootton is half a mile north-west; Broadway Green, a quarter of a mile south; Garlinge Green, a mile and a half north-west.

National School (maxed), erected in 1776, for 150 children; average attendance, 97.
