Historical Description

PLUCKLEY is a parish and village on the road from Cranbrook to Canterbury and Faversham, with a station which is 1 ¼ miles south of the village, on the main line of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, and is 6 miles west from Ashford and 50 from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Calehill, lathe of Scray, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, West Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of East Charing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The Beult stream waters the parish. The church of St. Nicholas is of Kentish rag, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower of flint and stone with spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are three stained windows, monuments to the family of Dering, some beautiful oak screens, and brasses with effigies to the Malemayns and Derings: the church affords 320 sittings, 70 being unappropriated. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a rectory, with Pevington annexed, joint net yearly value, £483, with 34 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Frederic Newton Style M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. St. Mary’s church, built in 1882, is of brick with stone facings in the Early English style, and has a small wooden spire, containing one bell: there are 210 sittings. There is also a Wesleyan chapel. The Pluckley Brick and Tile Co. Limited, have large works here; the valuable bed of day owned by this company produces a blue brick equal to the celebrated Staffordshire brick. A fair is held here 4 Nov. for toys and pedlery. Surrenden Dering, the property of Sir Henry Nevill Dering bart. K.C.M.G., C.B., J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is now occupied by Walter Winans esq.; the park extends over 226 acres. The soil is mostly loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas and hops. The area is 3,090 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £8,430; the population in 1901 was 886.
