Historical Description
POSTLING is a small parish at the foot of the chalk hills, one mile north from Sandling Junction, on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 north-west from Hythe, and 6 north west from Folkestone, in the Eastern division of the county, Heane hundred, lathe of Shepway, Elham union, Hythe petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Elham and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an ancient structure of flint with stone dressings, almost wholly in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire containing 3 bells: in the north wall of the chancel is an inscribed stone tablet bearing this legend:-XIX KL SEPTBR S EYSEBII CFSR &c., HEC ECCLA FVIT DEDICATA IN HONORE SCE DNE MATRS MARE,” which expanded, reads thus: —19 Kalendarum Septembris Sancti Eusebii Confessoris &c. haec ecclesia fuit dedicata in honore sanctae Dominae Matris Mariae”; the data of the year, unfortunately, does not appear: the chancel roof was restored in 1885 at a cost of £184: there are 100 sittings, and the spire, the roof of the nave, the porch and the nave floor were restored in 1897 at a cost of £567. The register dates from the year 1687. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Stanford, joint net yearly income £300, with 19 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury (two turns), and Mrs. Tylden (one turn), and held since 1901 by the Rev. Herbert Francis Smith M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, who resides at Stanford. Mrs. Herbert Deedes, of 4 Lyall street, Belgrave square, London S W is lady of the manor and owner of nearly the whole of the land. The soil is chalk and clay; subsoil, chalk. The Chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 1,563 acres; rateable value, £1,810; the population in 1901 was 88.
