Historical Description

Queenborough, a small borough town, anciently called Cyningburgh, from belonging to the Saxon kings, who had a castle here, near the entrance of the Swale, which afterwards obtained the name of the Castle of Shepey. This castle was entirely rebuilt, upon a magnificent plan, by Edward HI. about the year 1365, being raised, as the king himself says, in his letters patent, "for the strength of the realm, and refuge of the inhabitants or this isle." The whole was planned by the celebrated William of Wykcham, afterwards bishop of Winchester. When the castle was finished, the king visited it, and remained for several days, during which time he made the place a free borough, in honour of Philippa his queen, naming it from thence Queenborough. By charter, in the year 1366, he created it a corporation, making the townsmen burgesses, with power to choose annually a mayor and two bailiffs, who should he justices within the liberties of the corporation, exclusive of all others, and endowing them with cognizance of pleas, with the privilege of two markets weekly, on Mondays and Thursdays, and two fairs.

In the survey of the castle, made by order of Parliament in 1650, it is stated to consist of "twelve rooms, of one range of buildings below, and of about forty rooms, from the first story upwards, being circular and built of stone, with six towers, and certain outhouses, the roof being covered with lead; that within the circumference of the castle was one little round court, paved with stone, and in the middle of that one great well; and without the castle was one great court, surrounding it, both court and castle being surrounded with a great stone wall, and the outside of that moated round, the whole containing upwards of three acres of land." It was also stated "the whole was much out of repair, and no ways defensive of the commonwealth, or the island on which it stood, being built in the lime of bows and arrows; and that, as no platform for the planting of cannon, could be erected on it, and it having no command of the sea, although near unto it, it was not lit to be kept, but demolished; and that the materials were worth, besides the charge of taking down, 17921. 12s. 0 1/2d." The castle was shortly afterwards sold, and immediately demolished the moat, however, which surrounded it, and the well, still remain to point out its site. It is computed that the bottom of this well is 166 feet, and that of Sheerness upwards of 200 feet, below the deepest part of the adjacent seas.

Queenborough at present consists of one principal street, the houses of which are generally modern. The inhabitants are chiefly tradesmen, fishermen, and oyster-dredgers.

The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and is composed of a nave and chancel, with an ancient tower at the west end.

The corporation consists of a mayor, four jurats, two bailiff's, a recorder, town-clerk, chamberlain, and other officers, chosen annually by the free burgesses of the town and parish.

There is a copperas-work carried on at Queen-borough, which is the property of several different persons.

Although Queenborough was made a borough by Edward III, as above-mentioned, it does not appear to have sent members to parliament until the 13th of Queen Elizabeth. They are at present returned by the mayor, jurats, bailiffs, and burgesses, whose number amounts to about 150.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

QUEENBOROUGH, in the hundred of Sheppey, is a very ancient municipal borough and parish, 2 miles south from Sheerness, on an arm of the sea, with a station on the Sittingbourne and Sheerness branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and also the terminal station of the isle of Sheppey Light railway (S. E. & C, R.) The site of the town is referred to in ancient records as “Bynne,” and some traces of an ancient encampment, presumed to be Danish, were formerly to be seen in the vicinity. The spot where Queenborough now stands was selected by Edward III. for a town castle, which he made a free borough and named it “Queenborough,” in compliment to Philippa of Hainault, his queen. The castle, called “Sheppey Castle,” was demolished in the time of the Commonwealth and only a part of the moat remains, the Test having been altered by the construction of the railway. Over the castle well, originally about 268 feet deep, the railway company, about 1868, built a well-house in order to raise the water by steam power, and the town is now supplied from the cistern belonging to the railway. The borough is lighted with gas by the Sheppey Gas Co. whose works are at West Minster, and supplied with water by the Sheerness Urban District Council. The Corporation formerly consisted of a mayor 4 jurats and land and water bailiffs and a recorder, a court of quarter sessions being held with a separate jurisdiction limited to misdemeanours, but under the provisions of the “Unreformed Corporations Act,” 1883 (46 and 47 Vic. c. 18) it was incorporated by charter, 30 June, 1885, and the Corporation now consists of 4 aldermen and 12 councillors, from whom a mayor is elected, the corporate body acting as the urban sanitary authority. The property of the Corporation was for several years in the hands of trustees, but has been recovered, though the oyster fishery, by which the town was once chiefly supported has decreased greatly in value. Queenborough, before the Reform Act of 1832, returned two members, for a population of 786, but was then disfranchised: it was formerly a staple for wool, and its copperas manufactory was the first established in England: it has still glue and chemicas manure factories, and Portland cement works were erected in 1890. The South Eastern and Chatham Railway Company have constructed a branch line for the requirements of their continental traffic via Flushing. The continental mails are dispatched twice daily. The parish church of the Holy Trinity, restored in 1885, at a cost of nearly £600, is of Kentish ragstone, in the Gothic style of the 14th century, and has a tower containing 5 bells: there are 225 sittings, all being free, with the exception of the choir stalls and Corporation pews. The register dates from 1719 only, the earlier ones having been destroyed by fire. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £194, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Ernest William Bartlett, of London University. Here are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. There are numerous small charities, amounting to £47 yearly. The Guildhall, standing almost in the centre of the borough, is a building of two storeys, principally of brick, with a projecting upper storey, supported on four pillars, above which is a clock; on the roof of the building is a turret, with vane, dated 1793, and containing one bell: it includes a public library and reading room. Mrs. C. Wiglesworth is the principal landowner. The area is 297 acres of land, 5 of water, 263 of tidal water and 453 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,832; the population in 1901 was 1,456.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Dec. 12, 1871; clerk to the board, William James Harris, High street, Sittingbourne; attendance officer, Alfred Hall, High st. Queenborough.

Board School, built in 1872, & enlarged in 1893, far 350 children; average attendance, 115 boys, 95 girls & 123 infants.
