Historical Description

Rainham, chiefly the property of the Tuftons, Earls of Thanet. The church has been the burial place of this family since the reign of Charles I.and no fewer than eight Earls and six Countesses of Thanet lie interred here, together with many of their children and relatives. This fabric consists of a kind of double nave, separated by octagonal columns and pointed arches; and two chancels, divided by a screen of wood, having cinque-foil headed arches, the spandrils of which are ornamented with foliage, human heads, various spe cies of animals, a harp, a bugle horn, &c. In the south chancel are three graduated stone-stalls, with pointed arches.

RAINHAM, called in ancient deeds “Renham,” is a parish and village on the road from Chatham to Sittingbourne, with a station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 4 miles east-by-south from Chatham, 6 west-by-north from Sittingbourne and 34 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, lathe of Scray, hundred and union of Milton, Faversham petty sessional division, county, court district of Sittingbourne, rural deanery of Sittingbourne, and archdeaconry of Maidstone; the parish reaches to the creeks on the Medway and includes several marsh islands. The higher ground is chalk, rising into high downs with perpendicular cliffs on the coast line; to the south are woods.. The main streets of the village are lighted by gas, supplied by the Rochester and Chatham Gas Co. under the control of the Parish Council; water is supplied by the Bainham Water Works Co. Limited, who also provide for the neighbouring villages of Upchurch, Newington, Halstow and Hartlip. The church of St. Margaret is in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the nave arcade has five Pointed arches on octagonal piers, and a very wide wall pier with an octagonal pier attached to it; the arcade of the chancel is still less uniform and its central arch is smaller than the other two: there are tombs and monuments to the Tuftons, Earls of Thanet, many of whom were buried in the crypt; one to J. Norris esq. master of the Trinity House, and his wife, and on the floor a brass to John Bloor, d. 1529, and there are seven other brasses, and a fine oaken carved chest of the 14th century: the tower was seriously damaged by a violent storm, October 20, 1791: there are 800 sittings; in the north-west corner of the churchyard is a very fine yew tree. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Charles Cobb M.A. of Christs College, Cambridge. Sir Henry Nevill Dering bart. K.C.M.G., C.B., J.P. is lay impropriator of the tithes. There are Wesleyan, Congregational, Baptist, Bible Christian and United Free Methodist chapels; the Salvation Army hold their services in the Public Hall. The Public Hall, in the High street, is used for entertainments and other purposes, and will seat over 300 persons. A Fire Brigade was formed in 1901, and is under the control of the Parish Council. Bricks and cement are made here. The charities for distribution amount to about £20 yearly. A recreation ground of 7 acres adjoining the railway, was given to the parishioners by Lord Hothfield in 1887, in commemoration, of the Jubilee of H.M. the late Queen Victoria. Roman remains, principally earthenware, have been found in and about Otterham quay. Lord Hothfield, who is lord of the manor, the Governors of St. Katherine’s Hospital and E. J. Wingfield-Stratford esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, cherries and hops, and there are several market gardens. The area is 3,521 acres of land, 1 of water, 51 of tidal water and 414 of foreshore; rateable value, £16,821; the population in 1901 was 3,693.
