Historical Description

RINGWOULD is a parish and healthy and pleasant village situated on high ground, in an open and fertile country, with commanding prospects over the Downs and Goodwin Sands and surrounding neighbourhood, on the main road from Deal to Dover, about 1 ½ miles south from Walmer station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 south from Deal, 6 north from Dover and 94 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division of Wingham, Dover union and county court district, rural deanery of Sandwich and archdeaconry of Canterbury. Ringwould is a member of the Cinque port of Dover, and with Walmer (a member of the Cinque port of Sandwich), constitutes the Deal division of the liberties of the Cinque Ports and is under the jurisdiction of the “Cinque Port justices,” who hold their sessions at Deal.

The church of St. Nicholas is of flint and stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, with a tower of flint and brick, containing 5 bells; the church contains two brasses, and there are memorial windows to the Monins family; the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a rectory, net income £220, with residence and 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of John Henry Monins esq. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Malcolm Charles Baynes M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. John Henry Monins esq. J.P. of Ringwould House, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,606 acres of land and 49 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,497; the population in 1901 was 648 in the civil and 277 in the ecclesiastical parish.
