Historical Description

RIVER, deriving its name from its situation on the Dour river, is a village and parish 2 miles north-west from Dover, adjoining the high road, and may be considered a suburb of Dover. The South Eastern and Chatham railway passes through this parish, and has a station at Kearsney, between the villages of Ewell and River, which is also the junction for Deal. The parish is in the Eastern division of the county, Bewsborough hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Dover union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Dover and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. Gas is supplied to the houses from the Dover Gas Works. The church of St. Peter, rebuilt in 1832 and restored in 1876, at a cost of about £700, is of flint and brick with stone dressings, and has a tower containing 2 bells. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1620; marriages from 1661 and burials from 1664. The living is a vicarage, with that of Guston annexed, joint net yearly value £230, including 56 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Sherard Montagu Statharn M.A. of Queen’s College, Cambridge, and chaplain to the forces at Dover. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. A parish room was erected in 1893. There are paper mills and a brick field. Kearsney Abbey, erected by the late J. M. Fector esq. is now the property and residence of Charles William Curtis esq. J.P.; the grounds, 90 acres in extent, are traversed by the river Dour. Old Park, the seat of Major Robert Bartholomew Lawes D.L., J.P. and remarkable for the fine views obtainable from the terrace, was formerly in the possession of the Knights Templars, some remains of whose preceptory may be seen at Temple Farm; the park comprises 410 acres. Frank Leney esq. C. W. Curtis esq. Major Lawes, and Edward Pilcher Coleman esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,180 acres of land and 7 of water; assessable value, £6,316; the population in 1901 was 1,094.

A School Board of 5 members was established 22 Feb. 1872; William Spencer Orpin, The Slopes, Kearsney, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1874. & enlarged in 1897, for 143 children; average attendance, 136.
