Historical Description

In the parish church of Rodmersham, a small village about two miles to the left of our road, there are two very ancient arches in the south wall, probably designed for Sedilia. In the principal chancel there is an ancient wooden seat, with a panelled front, divided into three equal portions by elbows. The back is a skreen of open Gothic work, with an overhanging canopy, having a frieze of foliage. In the west window of the north aisle is a small mutilated figure of Edward the Confessor.

RODMERSHAM is a parish and village, three-quarters of a mile south of the road from London to Dover, and 2 ½ miles south-east from Sittingbourne station, on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Milton hundred and union, lathe of Scray, Faversham petty sessional division, Sittingbourne county court district and in the rural deanery of Sittingbourne and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Nicholas is of flint and stone and principally Perpendicular, with some Decorated windows and portions of Early English work, and has a tower containing 6 bells; the greater part of the church was restored in 1877 at a cost of £1,300, and in 1880 the chancel screen was restored and re-erected at a cost of £140: the east window is stained: the organ was rebuilt and re-voiced in 1901 in memory of the Rev. William James Mellor M.A. vicar of Rodmersham 1875—96: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £105, with 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of Robert Mercer esq. J.P. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Joseph John Nesbitt M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The vicarage house was erected by a former vicar in 1877 at a cost of nearly £2,000, and during the year 1886 he spent a further sum of £2,000 upon it. On the Green is a chapel for Bible Christians. The principal landowners are Robert Mercer esq. J.P. Baker Murton and Albert Jesse Thomas esqrs. Capt. Thomas William Vallance, of Aymers, Linsted, Richard James Tylden esq. of Milstead manor, and the vicar. The soil is in some places of a rich loam and in others chalky; subsoil, chalky. The chief crops are wheat, hops and fruit. The area is 1,234 acres; rateable value, £2,419; the population in 1901 was 447.

Newberry is 1 ½ miles south-east; Bargain Hill, 1 mile south-west; Pitstock, a mile and a half south; Scuddington, a mile and a half south-east; Rawling Street, 2 miles south-west. Dungate is a mile and a half south adjoining Kingsdown.
