Historical Description

ROLVENDEN is a village and parish, occupying a knoll or knot of several ridges, having marshes on the east and south 3 miles south-west from Tenterden, 6 miles south-east from Cranbrook station on the Paddock Wood and Hawkhurst branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 9 south from Headcorn station on the Tonbridge and Ashford section of the same line, but the nearest railway station is Rolvenden road, on the Rother Valley railway, 1 ½ miles from the village, which is 15 miles south-west from Ashford, in the Southern division of the county, Rolvenden hundred, lathe of Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division, Tenterden union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of West Charing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is of stone, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells; the east window is stained and there are marble tablets to the Gybbon and Monypenny families, and a brass to the Guildford family, 1444: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £225, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Harry Percival Smith M.A. Trinity College, Cambridge. At Rolvenden lane is a small chapel in connection with the church, where services are held every Sunday. There is also a Bible Christian chapel. The charities amount to £160 yearly, of which £126 is derived from the will of John Gibbons, of Charterhouse yard, Middlesex, dated 1762, and is expended in clothing and education. Hole Park (the Hole or Holy Well) is the property of Frank Morrison esq.: the mansion, a spacious building, in the Elizabethan style, with east and west wings, added about 1830 by the late Gibbon Monypenny esq.; it stands in a well-timbered and picturesque park of 260 acres and is in the occupation of Sackville Cresswell esq. J.P. Maytham Hall, a fine old mansion, lying to the south and erected during the early part of the last century, was partially destroyed by fire 31 Oct. 1893, but was rebuilt under the personal supervision of the late owner, John Cole Kemsley esq.; it is now the property of H. Powell Edwards esq. of Novington Manor, and is occupied by Mrs. Townsend. Rawlinson House is the seat of Mrs. Alexander Forbes Tweedie. Sparkeswood, the residence of Mrs. Baker; and Kingsgate House, of Miss Rosamond Suart. Halden Place, now a substantial farmhouse, was formerly the seat of the Dudley family. The principal landowners are Frank Morrison esq. of Farmwood, Ascot, Berks, Miss Suart, Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Alexander Forbes Tweedie and Howell Powell Edwards esq. of Novington, Manor, Sussex. The soil is clay and loam. Hops are extensively grown here; other crops are wheat and beans. The area is 5,741 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable, value, £4,791; the population in 1891 was 1,194.
