Historical Description

RYARSH is a parish, 1 mile north-west from Mailing station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 7 miles north-west from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Larkfield hundred, Mailing union and petty sessional division, county court district of Maidstone, rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. A stream flows through the parish. The church of St. Martin, a venerable edifice of stone in the Norman, Early English and later styles, has a tower containing 3 bells; an addition was made to the churchyard in 1885: there are 256 sittings. The register of marriages dates from the year 1539; baptisms and burials from 1550. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, with residence and glebe, valued at £25 yearly, in the gift of C. J. S. Whitburn esq. and held since 1877 by the Rev. Edmund Roger Manwaring White M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Fartherwell is the residence of the Rev. the Hon. E. Vesey Bligh M.A., D.L., J.P. and the Hon. Lady Isabel Bligh: attached are grounds of 225 acres. Near Calais (or Callis) Court, runs an old Roman road; several Roman relics have been found, as well as coins with the words “Callis Court” engraved on them. The Hon. Ralph, W. P. Nevill, of Birling Manor, who is lord of the manor, C. J. S. Whitburn esq. of Addington Park, Sir Henry Hawley bart. and the Rev. the Hon. E. V. Bligh are the principal landowners. The soil is light sand; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, hops and fruit. The area is 1,357 acres; rateable value, £2,709; the population in 1901 was 539 in the civil and 593 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 21,672, dated March 24, 1888, a detached part of Ryarsh parish was added to Addington.

School (mixed), built in 1869 & enlarged in 1880, for 100 children; average attendance, 71.
