Historical Description

SANDHURST is a parish and village, separated from Sussex by the rivers Kennett and Rother, 4 miles south-east from Hawkhurst terminal station on a branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 6 north-east from Etchingham station on the Tonbridge and Hastings line of the same, 7 south-west from Tenterden, 7 south-east from Cranbrook, and 51 from London, in the Southern division of the county, in Selbrittenden hundred, lathe of Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division and union, Tenterden, and Cranbrook county court district, and in the rural deanery of West Charing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing 5 bells: there are 325 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a rectory net yearly value £395, including 11 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1857 by the Rev. George Ridout M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There is Baptist chapel founded in 1730, with 40 sittings and a Wesleyan chapel. The Clock Tower is a building of red brick, erected in 1889 by the parishioners and friends as a memorial to Captain Arthur Oakes of Downgate. A fair is held here on the 25th day of May for cattle. Fowle’s charity, left in the year 1632 by Sir John Fowls, knighted at Theobald’s, Herts, Sept. 23, 1619, is for the benefit of five widows or women with large families; another charity consists of 1a. 1r. 16p. of land, called f‘the Malthouse plot” producing about £3 10s. yearly, of which £2 10s. is applied towards putting poor boys out as apprentices. Downgate, the seat of James Edward Bowles Wilson esq. is half a mile west of the village. The Earl of Cranbrook G.C.S.I., P.C., D.C.L, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. French, of Risden, Hawkhurst, Kent, The Rev. Cecil Mills M.A. rector of Barford, Warw. and the trustees of the late Frederick Brazier esq. are the principal landowners. The land is heavy; subsoil, clay and gravel, yielding good crops of hops, wheat and pasture, with a quantity of marsh land. The area is 4,401 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £4,912; the population in 1901 was 954.
