Historical Description

SEAL is a parish and pretty village, on the Godstone and Maidstone high road, a miles north-east from Sevenoaks (Bat and Ball) railway station, on the Sevenoaks branch of the South Eastern and Ghatham railway, and 25 from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Codsheath lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Sevenoaks petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Shoreham, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. This place gives the title of baron to the Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family, barons Saye and Sele. The church of St. Peter is of stone, in the Early English style, with later insertions, and has a tower of Rectilinear date, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is a brass, with effigy, to William de Bryene kt. one of the lords of Kemsing and Seal, 1395, and a number of memorial windows; the church affords 440 sittings, 123 being free. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £190, with residence, in the gift of Lord Sackville, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Charles Edward Few M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford and J.P. The Marquess Camden is lay rector. The Bible Christian chapel here was erected in 1881. The poor have £9 yearly, derived from the interest of £323 14s. 10d. left in 1878 by Mrs. Randolph, of Godden Green, to be given to a widow who must be upwards of fifty years of age and have resided in the parish not less than five years. Sere is a Convalescent Home supported by the Dowager Lady Hillingdon, and available for 19 children. Wildernesse, a richly wooded and picturesque estate of 1,250 acres, is the seat of Lord Hillingdon. The ancient Tudor mansion of Stone-Pitts, the property of Maj. John Middleton Rogers, of River Hill, Sevenoaks, is the residence of Edith Lady Auckland, and Philip Symons esq. Lord Sackville G.C.M.G, who is lord of the manor, Lord Hillingdon, Arthur Pearson Davison esq. of Broughton Grange, Oxon, and Maj. J. M. Rogers are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy and loamy. The crops are fruit, hops, wheat and roots. The area is 4,441 acres of land, a great portion of which is woodland and 4 of water; assessable value, £8,089; the population in 1901 was, civil, 1,688, ecclesiastical, 1,016.
