Historical Description

SEASALTER, called in Domesday Book a small borough, is west of the town of Whitstable, and a parish in the hundreds of Seasalter and Westgate, occupying a retired situation and bounded by the ocean on the north the portion beyond Whitstable urban area, combined with a part of the old parish of Whitstable, has been renamed Whitstable-cum-Seasalter. About three parts of the parish is arable, with a little wood, the soil being a deep clay; the remainder consists of good grazing land partly reclaimed from the sea. The old church and churchyard are now used only for burial purposes; the site of a still more ancient church was discovered some years since on the falling away of a portion of the cliff, owing to the encroachment of the sea. The church of St. Alphege, erected in 1845, in the High street, is of brick and stone in the Early English style, and has a tower containing a clock and one bell; the east window and two others are stained; there are 952 sittings. The register dates from the year 1588. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Thomas Pitman M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. The charities for the poor of Seasalter amount to £35 yearly, derived from lands, and an annuity of £2 from Whitstable. The manor belongs to the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury. The chief landowners are the Hon. Henry Augustus Milles-Lade, of Nash Court, Boughton, Earl Sondes, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and Sir Edwyn Sandys Dawes K.C.M.G, of Mount Ephraim, Faversham. The area of Whitstable-cum-Seasalter parish is 4,351 acres of land, 3 of water, 133 of tidal water and 1,379 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,316; the population in 1901 was 593.
