Historical Description

SELLINDGE (or Sellinge) is a parish and scattered village, on the road from London through Maidstone to Hythe, 2 miles east from Smeeth station on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 5 ½ north-west from Hythe, 6 ½ south-east from Ashford and 60 from London by road, in the Eastern division of the county, Bircholt, Franchise Street and Worth hundreds, liberty of Romney Marsh, lathe of Shepway, Elham petty sessional division and union, Hythe county court district, rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary is of stone in the Early English and Later styles, with some portions of Norman work, and has a tower containing 5 Dells; there are several memorial windows; the church affords 250 sittings; in the churchyard are several yew trees, one of which measures 5 ½ yards in girth at 3 feet from the ground. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £193, including 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. F. Gwatkin, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Cuthbert Ellidge Owtram, of Worcester College, Oxford. The great tithes are paid to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1883. The charities, amounting to about £80 yearly, are derived principally from land in Romney Marsh, left by W. Fordred, and are distributed in blankets, coal and money. There are besides several small charities. Mrs. Herbert Deedes, of Saltwood Castle, who is lady of the manor, the Governors of St. Katharine’s Hospital, Regent’s Park, London, All Souls’ College, Oxford, and the Rev. James Bellamy D.D. president of St. John’s College, Oxford, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; southern part rock; middle, greensand and stiff clay; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, hops and some grass land. The area is 1,927 acres; rateable value, £6,989; the population in 1901 was 708.

By Local Government Board Order 19,013, dated Mar. 24, 1888, a detached part of Sellinge was transferred to Dymchurch.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 3 Dec. 1877; James Hobbs, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

National School, built in 1841, for 180 children & enlarged in 1880, & transferred to the Board in 1877. In 1899 the old school was closed & a new school & house was erected; average attendance, 157.
