Historical Description

On Shottington Hill, in the parish of Selling, there are traces of an ancient camp, of a triangular form, with the angles rounded. In the centre of the area, there is a windmill, and its whole extent includes nearly two acres of ground. It had two entrances, one on the south side and a second to the northeast. About half a mile northward from this eminence is a very large tumulus, now planted with beech-trees.

SELLING is a well-wooded and picturesque parish and village with station on the Faversham and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 50 miles from London, 4 south-east from Faversham, 8 west of Canterbury, 14 north of Ashford, in the North Eastern division of the county, lathe of Scray, Boughton-under-Blean and Faversham hundreds, Faversham petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The village, which is small, stands on rising ground facing the south in a dry and healthy country. The church of St. Mary is chiefly of flint, and has a central tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the chapels are Early English and the rest of the edifice Perpendicular; the east window contains some fine ancient stained glass; there are remains of a rood loft, some mural monuments and a brass effigy of a civilian, c. 1530, with figures of children, of the same date; the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Earl Sondes, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John Ellston M.A. of Magdalen Hall, Oxford. On Shottendon Hill, in the southern part of this parish, are the supposed remains of a large triangular camp. About half a mile north is a large mound, planted with beech trees. Sole Street House is the residence of the Rev. William Hilton Simpson M.A. Earl Sondes is lord of the manor, and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, the Hon. H. A. Milles-Lade, of Nash Court, Boughton-under-Blean, and Lieut.-Col. Charles S. Hardy, of Chilham Castle, are the largest landowners. The soil and subsoil are various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, hops, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 2,453 acres; rateable value, £5,973; in 1901 the population was 756.

Owenscourt is a mile and a half north-west; Mullinge and Cockshill, 1 mile south-east; Three Beeches, 1 mile south-east; Sole Street, a mile and a half north-west; Gosmere, 1 ½ miles north-west.
