Historical Description

In the parish of Sheldwich is Lee's Court, the large and magnificent seat of Lord Sondes. In the church of Throwley, which adjoins Sheldwich, there are many ancient monuments of the Sondes, who became possessed of that mauor in the reign of Henry VI. A priory of Benedictines, subordinate to the abbey of St. Bertin, at St. Omer's, in Flanders, was founded in this parish in the reign of King Stephen, and continued till the suppression of alien priories in the reign of Henry V. Some remains of foundations and flint walls, at a small distance from the parsonage, still point out the site of the conventual buildings.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SHELDWICH is a village and parish, on the road from Ashford to Faversham, 3 miles south from Faversham, 3 west from Selling station on the Faversham and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the North Eastern division, of the county, lathe of Scray, Faversham hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. James is of flint and stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, with some remains of Norman work, and has a tower of Perpendicular date, containing 6 bells: there are several brasses, including one with a fine canopy, to Richard and Dionysia Attelese, 1394, another to John and Isabella Cely, 1426, and one to Joanna Mareys, 1431: in 1888, the church was restored at a cost of £2,500: a new lych gate was placed in the churchyard in 1892. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1560; marriages from 1558. The living is a vicarage, neb yearly value £194, with 2 acres of glebe and house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1870 by the Rev. The charities are £2 yearly, derived from the rent of Bell Horn farm, and £3 each, yearly, from bequests of H. H. Read esq. and the late Hon. George Watson, of Rockingham Castle, Northants (d. 1852). Lees Court, a classic structure, built from designs by Inigo Jones, stands in a large park and is the seat of Earl Sondes D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner: the President and fellows of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, are also large landowners.
