Historical Description

SHORNE is a parish and village half a mile from the main road from London to Canterbury, and midway between Gravesend and Rochester, 2 miles from Higham station, and 3 ½ south-east from Gravesend stations on the North Kent (South Eastern and Chatham) railway, 4 north-west from Rochester. The parish extends to the banks of the Thames, and is in the Mid division of the county, Shamwell hundred, lathe of Aylesford, petty sessional division of Rochester, Strood union, Gravesend county court district, and in the rural deanery of Cobham and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The Thames and Medway canal passes through the parish. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is in the Early English and later styles, but retains some interesting details of the original Norman fabric, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the church contains a fine monument with effigy to Henry de Cobham, of the time of Edward II. and a brass incised with the figure of a chalice and the letters I.H.S. and inscribed to Sir Thomas Elys, 1569, a former vicar, and there are other brasses, and a memorial window to Mrs. Jane Ball, d. 1882; the church was re-opened in 1875, after restoration at a cost of £3,500, and has 500 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1538; marriages from 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £220, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Alfred Lloyd Coates M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, and surrogate. The Catholic church here was restored in 1895 at the cost of George M. Arnold esq. of Milton hall. There are also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities for distribution amount to about £100 yearly. Court Lodge, occupied by the Hon. Lady Hely-Hutchinson, affords several beautiful specimens of oak carving. In the marshes is a small battery, raised in 1796; and there is another at Lower Hope point, in the parish of Cliffe. The Earl of Darnley, who is lord of the manor, George M. Arnold esq. F.S.A, of Milton Hall, and the Rev. Tufnell Samuel Barrett M.A. rector of Teversal, Notts, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel and clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are corn and hops. The area is 3,214 acres of land, 15 of water, 129 of tidal water and 13 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,577; the population in 1901 was 886.

National School (mixed), built in 1872, for 160 children; average attendance, 119.
