Historical Description

SIBERTSWOLD (or Shepherdswell), probably deriving its name from one of its earliest Saxon proprietors, Sibert is a parish and small village, with a station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, which passes through by a tunnel a mile and one third long in this parish, 6 miles north-west from Dover, 7 ½ south-west from Deal and 74 ¾ by rail from London; it is in the Eastern division of the county, Bewsborough hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Dover union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Dover and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Andrew, rebuilt in 1863, is of flint in the Early English style, and has a bell cot containing one bell: there are five stained windows and some memorials, including one erected to Harriet, wife of the Rev. Thomas Palkner M.A. vicar: the church affords 240 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a vicarage, with that of Coldred annexed, joint yearly net value £250, with 20 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas Falkner M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, and surrogate. The Wesleyan chapel here was erected in 1870. Several entrenchments are visible in this neighbourhood, including fairly complete remains of a Danish camp and burying ground. The Earl of Guilford and others have manorial rights. The principal landowners are the Earl of Guilford, trustees of the late Admiral Sir Edward Bridges Rice K.C.B. (d. 1902), the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and W. Dixon esq. The soil is light and easily worked, but on the top of the hills there is a portion of stiff clay mire difficult of tillage. The surface, like that of the neighbouring parishes, is a succession of hill and dale. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,849 acres; rateable value, £3,055; the population in 1901 was 463.

National School (mixed), built in 1854, for 94 children.; average attendance, 90.
