SMARDEN is a town and parish, on the road from Cranbrook to Canterbury and Faversham, 3 miles south-east from Headcorn and 3 south-west from Pluckley stations, on the Tonbridge and Ashford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 10 west from Ashford and 47 from London, in the Southern division of the county, lathe of Scray, hundreds of Barkley, Blackborne and Calehill, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, West Ashford union, West Charing rural deanery and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The Beult stream flows past the church, and is crossed by a bridge. The church of St. Michael, a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, has a tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the east window is stained, and there are numerous tablets: the church was restored in 1869, and affords 480 sittings. The register dates from the year 1632. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £362, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Percy Herbert Collins M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and F.G.S. There is a Baptist chapel (Zion), founded in 1744, a Particular Baptist chapel, rebuilt in 1893, a General Baptist chapel, built in 1902, and a reading room and library. Turner’s charity of £22, arising from land left in 1686 by Jacob Turner, of London, is for clothing and a distribution of wheat. In 1716 Stephen Dadson, of Bethersden, gave a house and land, with a dwelling house, for a free school, the annual income of which is now about £52 10s.; the original grant permitted 6 boys to attend the school from Bethersden, but the Charity Commissioners have sanctioned the payment of 21s. yearly to the school at Bethersden in lieu of this privilege. Romden, formerly the residence of the Otways, was partially taken down in 1866 and converted into a farmhouse, but the tower and other portions of the original structure remain. Many of the old farmhouses have picturesque timber-framed gables, and Marley farm retains a chimney in the centre of the house, consisting merely of a wooden framework, filled in with coarse plaster. John Sayer esq. of Clearmount, Charing, is lord of the manor. The manor house, now called “Ash Farm,” has ceilings and other portions of moulded woodwork, and chimneys dating from about 1600. The principal landowners are W. Hinds esq. Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. of Linton Park, and John Sayer esq. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans and hops. The area is 5,348 acres of land and 39 of water; rateable value, £13,666; the population in 1901 was 994.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 30 May, 1873; George Langley, Charing, clerk to the board; Jeremiah Dabson, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built, with teacher’s residence, in 1832, for 200 children; average attendance, 66 boys &. girls & 51 infants.
