Historical Description

SMEETH is a parish and village, on the road from Ashford to Hythe, with a station 1 mile south from the village on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 58 miles from London and 4 ½ south-east from Ashford, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Bircholt franchise, lathe of Shepway, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, East Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary is of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a tower containing one bell: there are several monuments, and the east window is stained: the church was restored in 1881, and affords 300 sittings, 60 being free. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £249, with residence and 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Charles Hope Robertson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Fairs are held here on May 15th and Sept. 29Th The Paddock is the residence of Charles Anthony Bovill esq. Scott’s Hall formerly stood near the foot of the hill, east of the village, and was the property and residence of the knightly family of Scott, who are supposed to have descended from John Balliol, King of Scotland Sir William Scott, Knight Marshal of England in 1350, was the first of the family who resided here: the site of the old Hall continued in the family till 1784, when it was conveyed to Sir John Honywood bart. and is now the property of Lord Brabourne, who is the principal landowner and lord of the manor. The soil is various; subsoil, ragstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and peas and some hops. The area is 1,613 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £5,408; the population in 1901 was 543.

Stonehill, Lilley Hole, 1 mile east, and part of Brabourne Lees, 1 ½ mile north-east, are in this parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 26 February, 1872, & reconstituted 25 Aug. 1875; Rev. C. Hope Robertson M.A. the rector, is chairman & clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1870, for 150 children; average attendance, 100.
