Historical Description

SNODLAND is a village and parish, situated amid an undulating country, on the western bank of the Medway, with a station on the North Kent line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 6 ½ miles south-west from Rochester and 8 north-west from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Larkfield hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and union, Maidstone county court district, Cobham rural deanery, and Rochester archdeaconry and diocese. The village is lighted with gas from works, the property of the Mid-Kent Gas Light & Coke Co. and supplied with water from the works of the Mid Kent Water Co. at Hailing. The church of All Saints, standing close upon the Medway, is of Kentish rag and flint, intermixed with fragments of Roman bricks and tiles; the building is mainly Early English of the 13th and 14th centuries, but with some traces of the Perpendicular style, and has a tower, restored about 1894, and containing a clock and 5 bells; there are monuments to the Palmer, Tilghman and Waghorn families, memorial windows to Archdeacon Carey and others, and a few brasses. The interior was restored in 1873 and partially renovated in 1892, and affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, with residence, and 19 acres of glebe and Ferry house, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Gerald Henry Jackson M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. The New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian) church, consecrated June 27Th 1882, and erected at a cost amounting to over £5,000, has sittings for 300 persons. There are Congregational, Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels. A cemetery of 4 acres was formed in 1895, at a cost of £2,000; it contains a mortuary chapel, and is under the control of the Parish Council. A large clock tower with three illuminated dials has been added to the buildings of the British school as a memorial to the late Mr. Charles Townsend Hook. A Working Men’s institute was erected in 1877 by W. Lee esq. and contains reading and billiard rooms, library of 600 volumes and a concert hall. The Temperance Hotel and Coffee Tavern was erected by the Misses Hook in 1882. The Public Baths were erected in 1900, at the expense of the Misses Hook, and by them transferred to the Parish Council. The paper mill of Messrs. C. T. Hook & Co. Limited employs about 350 persons and manufactures weekly more than 150 tons of paper; there are also extensive lime and cement works in the neighbourhood. May’s charity, left in 1800 by John May, of Holborough, consists of certain monies in the hands of the Charity Commissioners, for the joint benefit of the parishes of Snodland, Hailing and Birling, the interest of which is to be expended on the National schools; it also includes a charge of £20 yearly on land in Holborough, to be expended in providing great coats for the aged poor of the above three parishes: the Godden charity, derived from the rent of 20 acres of land at ivy Church, left in 1661 by Edward Godden, is applied in apprenticing children of the parish memorial almshouses in Waghorn road, erected in 1893, in remembrance of her brother, Eustace, by Miss M. M. Hook. Holborough Court, the property and residence of William Lee Henry Roberts esq. J.P. was rebuilt in 1884; Veles is occupied by the Misses Hook; Ivymeath is the residence of William Wood esq. The Misses Dickson are ladies of the manor. The principal landowners are W. L. H. Roberts esq. William Henry Day esq. the Hon. Ralph Pelham Nevill, of Birling Manor, the Misses Hook, and Col. Everard T. Luck, of The Hermitage, West Mailing. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and hops. The area is 1,961 acres, 3 of water, 12 of tidal water and 18 of foreshore; in 1897 about 100 acres were annexed from the parish of Birling, of which about 85 are common land, and 4 of water; rateable value, £17,191; the population in 1871 was 1,844; in 1881, 2,826, in 1891, 3,188, and in 1901, 4,136.

Pomphery and Dowde Chapel are places of interest in the immediate neighbourhood.

Schools

British (for boys, girls. & infants), built in 1835, for 200 children & enlarged in 1888 by the addition of the old Providence chapel; it will now hold 340 boys & girls in the mixed department & 250 infants; average attendance, 142 boys, 149 girls & 200 infants; with the exception of Government aid it is entirely supported by the Misses Hook; William Robinson Hodgkinson, master; Miss Stead, infants’ mistress. In connection with this school is a manual training school for teaching woodwork, erected in 1893 in the High street, at the cost of the Misses Hook.

National (endowed), erected in 1868, for 150 boys, 150 girls & 140 infants; average attendance, 134 boys, 120 girls & 110 infants; the endowment, amounting to £24 yearly is derived from lands left by John May, of Holborough, in 1800.
