Historical Description

SPELDHURST is a village and parish extending to the Sussex border, 3 miles north-west from Tunbridge Wells stations on the South Eastern and Chatham and London, Brighton and South Coast railways and 5 south-west from Tonbridge, in the South Western division of the county, and in the hundreds of Codsheath Somerden and Washlingstone, lathes of Aylesford and Sutton-at-Hone, petty sessional division and county court district of Tunbridge Wells, union of Tonbridge, rural deanery of South Mailing, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. A stream rising near Smokeham Farm flows through part of the parish. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, destroyed by lightning 22 Oct. 1791, is now of stone in the Early English style, having been entirely rebuilt (with the exception of the base of the tower) in 1871 at a cost of upwards of £7,000; the tower contains a clock and 8 bells; the whole of the windows, 10 of which were designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones bart. are stained: there are 450 sittings. At the south entrance to the churchyard is a good open timbered lych gate. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, with Groombridge annexed, joint net yearly value £240, with residence and 8 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Misses Saint, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Donald Hilaro Ouseley Dimsdale MacKinnon M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford and F.R.G.S. A charity, amounting to £25 yearly, left in the reign of James I. by Sir Thomas Smith a London merchant, and of which the Skinners’ Company are the trustees, is distributed in bread every Sunday and in blankets at Christmas to the poor of the parish; Burrows’ and Booth’s charities produce about £6 yearly, which is divided among widows of Speldhurst, Rusthall, etc. every Christmas morning. Danemore Park is the residence of James Bowles Reeves esq. Dornden is a gabled house with a tower and oriel windows, erected from designs by the late Sir Charles Barry R.A. and is now the property and residence of the Misses Harrison. Rusthall House is the residence of Frank McClean esq. J.P. and Broom Hill Bank of Henry Beeman esq. Charles Watson Powell esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, Frederick Woods esq. of Burrs Wood, Groombridge, Cuthbert Morris Field esq. of Ashurst Park, the Misses Harrison, of Dornden, John James Barrow esq. of Langton, James Bowles Reeves esq. and the Misses Saint are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and sand subsoil, clay, sand and rock. The chief crops are hops, wheat, barley and turnips, with a good portion of pasture land. The area of the civil parish is 3,983 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £11,489; the population in 1901 was 1,738, of which 3,840 are in the ecclesiastical parish of St. Paul’s, Rusthall. The population attached to St. Mary’s parish church in 1901, including the hamlet of Old Groombridge, was 1,296.
