Historical Description

STANFORD is a parish and pleasant village, situated on the, ancient Roman road called “Stane” or “Stone Street,” which, proceeding from the coast to Canterbury, crosses the stream running through the village by a ford, in part furnishing its name; it is close to the Westenhanger station of the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, which is in this parish, and is 4 miles north-west from Hythe, 7 west from Folkestone and 75 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundreds of Stowting and Street, lathe of Shepway, Elham petty sessional division and union, Hythe county court district, and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of All Saints is of stone in the Early English style; it was rebuilt in 1841 and 1878, and has a bell cote containing 1 bell; there are several memorial windows; the church affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, with residence and 10 acres of glebe, with the vicarage of Postling annexed and 19 acres of glebe annexed in 1901, joint net yearly value £300, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, two turns, and Mrs. Tylden, one turn, the rectory being held since 1899, and the combined livings since 1901 by the Rev. Herbert Francis Smith M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel was built in 1845 and rebuilt in 1868. There is a benefaction of about £5 10s. yearly, which is distributed at Christmas. At a short distance are the ruins of the ancient mansion of Westenhanger, once a large and magnificent building and said to have contained 126 apartments and 365 windows; here, it is reported, Rosamond Clifford, the fair mistress of Henry II. whose name is given to one of the towers, was kept for some time; it is now a farm house. Westenhanger station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway derives its name from the mansion. In this parish, and just outside Westenhanger, is the Folkestone racecourse station, opened in 1898; several meetings axe held annually. Laurence Hardy esq. of Sandling Park, is the principal landowner, and George Cawley Swindells esq. of Monks’ Horton, is lord of the manor. The soil is a rich loam. The chief crops are wheat and grass. The area is 1,191 acres; rateable value, £3,942; the population in 1901 was 312.

Newin Green, one mile and a quarter south on the road from Ashford to Hythe, and Gibbon’s Brook, half a mile west of the village, are parts of Stanford parish.

National School (mixed), built in 1847 & enlarged at various times, for 90 children; average attendance, 70.
