Historical Description

STOKE is a village and parish, on the borders of the marsh district, extending to the Medway, 3 ½ miles east from Sharnal Street station, on the Gravesend and Port Victoria branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 8 north-east from Rochester, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Hoo hundred and union, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Peter, built in the reign of Edward I. is of stone, and has a low western tower containing 3 bells. In 1898 the church underwent a partial restoration at a cost of £2,000; there are some brasses, and a font of very rude workmanship of Norman date: the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1666. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £107, with residence and 44 acres of glebe, in the gift of the family of the late John Foord esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas John Cleave Warne M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and ad eundem of Durham University. The Roman Catholic church here is dedicated to St. George: here is also a Bible Christian chapel, built in 1889 at a cost of £600, and seating 150. Malmayne’s Hall, half a mile north-west, and the property of R. D. de Uphaugf esq. of Hollingbourne, is now occupied by a farmer. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Richard D. De Uphaugh esq. of Hollingbourne, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and Grey’s trustees. The soil is light loam; the subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 2,857 acres of land, a great portion of which is marsh, 12 of water, 280 of tidal water, and 905 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,240; the population in 1891 was 675, and in 1901, 705.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 29 July, 1874, for the united district of Stoke & Hoo Allhallows; Thomas Clibbon, 42 High street, Rochester, clerk to the board. William Coopper, 10 High street, Chatham, attendance officer.

The children attend school at Hoo, Allhallows.
