Historical Description

The parish church of Stone, a village two miles northeast from Dartford, on the right of our road, is a spacious and handsome structure, situated on an eminence, from whence the prospects are very extensive. It consists of a nave, chancel, and aisles, with a small chapel adjoining to the chancel on the north, and a square massive tower at the west end. The whole is built in the pointed style, and the interior is remarkably light and elegant. On the tower there was formerly a high octangular spire, which being much damaged by lightning, was removed in the year 1638. The architecture of the tower is an interesting specimen of the pointed, or gothic style, and is well entitled to the notice of the curious. In the pavement of the chancel is a slab inlaid with a very remarkable brass of a priest in his proper vestments, standing in the centre of a cross, composed of eight trefoil arches. On the stem, which is adorned with vine leaves, is this inscription: "Hic jacet Dus. Johes Lambarde quondam Rector ecclie de Stone, qui obiit XIIo. Die mensis Marcii, anno dne. Mo. CCCC. VIII." Over the head of the priest is a scroll, pointing from his breast, with these words : Miserei met deus sedm. magnam, unam tuam : and round the face of the arches is inscribed, "Credo qd. redemptor meus vivit et in novissimo die de tra surrecturus sum et in came mea videbo deum saluatorem meum." Stone Castle, in the parish of Stone, was the name given to a castellated dwelling, which, in the reign of Edward III. belonged to Sir John de Northwood. A small square tower at the east end of the present mansion, is the only part that has any appearance of a fortress.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STONE (near Dartford) is a parish and village, on the south bank of the Thames and on the old Dover road, 1 mile west from Greenhithe station on the North Kent section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 2 north-east from Dartford and 17 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Aston hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Dartford petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Gravesend and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The very elegant and interesting church of St. Mary the Virgin, though externally plain and rough, like most Kentish churches, presents internally some of the finest specimens extant of the Transition period between Early English and Decorated; the arcade surrounding the chancel is almost identical in design with the arcades round the chapels of the choir at Westminster Abbey; the spandrels of the arches are filled with finely-wrought foliage; the vestry (originally the Wilshyre chantry) is a Perpendicular work erected in the 16th century, and contains a tomb of that period within a groined canopy, and there are some brasses; an organ chamber and a fine-toned organ were erected in 1870 at a cost of £400; there are 400 sittings, ail free; the churchyard has been increased half an acre at a cost of £300, and is now under the control of the parish council. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1718; marriages, 1722. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £357, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester, and held since 1859 by the Rev. Frederick William Murray M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, hon. canon of Rochester and chaplain to the Bishop of Rochester. There is a small iron church at Green Street Green, partly in this parish and otherwise in that of Darenth and served by the clergy of the latter parish. St. Michael’s iron Mission church, Invicta road, erected in 1883 at a cost of £500, for the New Brent district, consists of chancel, nave, vestry, organ chamber and a turret containing one bell: it will seat 300 persons. The Primitive Methodist chapel is in Hill House road. A Cemetery was opened in 1899 at a cost of £5,500: there are two mortuary chapels and a superintendent’s residence; the whole is under the control of the Dartford Rural District Council. The charities amount to £9 5s. a year. The “Stone Castle Charity,” founded under the will of the late Dr. Plume, is applied in augmentation of the livings of Church of England clergymen residing within the diocese of Rochester; John Camden Hayward esq. of Dartford, is the solicitor and receiver to the trustees of this estate. The City of London Asylum, erected in 1866, is pleasantly situated on an elevated piece of ground about 1 ½ mile from Dartford, overlooking the Thames, and is surrounded by spacious grounds; an additional wing was built in 1876 and the building will hold 550 patients; a cottage hospital, with 14 beds, was erected in 1880, to provide for cases of a contagious nature from the asylum; private patients are received at a uniform charge of a guinea per week, with separate apartments; the extent of the grounds was originally 33 acres, but in 1890 107 additional acres were acquired, in order to insure the thorough employment of the patients and the better disposal of sewage, as well as for additional buildings; and in 1900 and 1902 54 ½ acres were added for farm purposes: the church was erected in 1898—1900 and opened 18 May, 1901: the asylum is under the superintendence of Ernest William White M.B.Lond., M.R.C.P.Lond,; the Rev. Oscar Hewitt M.A.Cantuar. is chaplain. The County of Kent Female Penitentiary, established in 1860, in union with the Church Penitentiary Association, is situated in a fine open space on the east side of the old Roman road, near the Brent and about 2 miles from Dartford; it was erected and opened in 1866, and a wing was added in 1877; the whole will hold 57 penitents. Horn’s Cross is on the road to Dartford. Shellbank, on the road to Green Street Green, is a curious specimen of shell-former strata. Stone Park is the residence of Thomas Bevan esq. D.L., J.P. Of Stone Castle, built in the time of King John, there are still some remains south of the Dover road, consisting chiefly of one small square tower, with a newel staircase in the wall; the modern building, called “Stone Castle,” stands in well-wooded grounds of 38 acres in extent, but is now (1902) unoccupied. The village was given by King Ethelred to the see of Rochester in 993 and the bishops had formerly a house here. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the lords of the manor. The principal landowners are James Colyer Fergusson esq. Arthur Henry Colyer esq. and Thomas Bevan esq. Here are chalk and gravel pits. The soil is gravel; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans, but this is a fruit-growing district, and there are about 500 acres of woodland. The area is 3,009 acres of land, 245 of tidal water and 48 of foreshore; rateable value, £27,265; the population in 1901 was 5,124, including 63 officers and 518 inmates of the City of London Asylum.

Littlebrock is 1 mile north-west; Western Cross, 1 mile south-east.
