Historical Description

Stroud, which from its proximity to the above city, is considered as its suburb; it consists chiefly of one narrow street. At the entrance of the town from London stands the parish church, which is dedicated to St. Nicholas. This structure has been lately rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, under the sanction of an act of parliament obtained in 1812. The new edifice is composed of stone, and is sufficiently substantial, but of a heavy and uninteresting character. The expense incurred on this occasion amounted to 8,500l.

On the banks of the Medway, about half a mile south of Stroud church, was the site of an ancient building called the Temple, so named from its having been formerly the mansion of the Knights Templars, the cellar of which, with a groined roof of squared chalk, is still remaining under the present building, called the Temple Farm The inhabitants of Stroud are chiefly supported by maritime occupations, and by the fisheries on the river Medway, of which that of oysters is the principal.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STROOD is an ancient town and parish, in the hundred of Shamwell and head of a union, separated from Rochester and Chatham by the Medway, over which there is a fine iron bridge of three arches. The Rochester Bridge station of the South Eastern and Chatham railway is in this parish, and the line is continued across the river by a girder bridge to the station in Rochester High street, and in the adjoining parish of Frindsbury is the Strood station of the North Kent (South Eastern and Chatham) line, which has been extended to Rochester and Chatham, by means of an iron lattice bridge over the Medway, erected in 1890.

By an Order of the County Council, No. 31,648, dated June 27, 1894, and confirmed by Local Government Board Order, September 18, 1894, taking effect September 30, 1894, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), Strood has been divided into two civil parishes, Intra and Extra, being respectively the parts within and without Rochester municipal borough. The church of St. Nicholas is a plain square building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower, containing a clock and 3 bells, and was rebuilt in 1812; except the ancient tower, which was damaged by fire, Dec. 17, 1898; there are 750 sittings, 450 being free.

The register dates from the year 1565. The living was declared a vicarage November 20Th 1886, net income £79, with 2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Walter James Tait M.A. of Baliol College, Oxford. The Bishop of Rochester is impropriator of the great tithes. The population attached to the parish church in 1901 was 8,543. St. Mary the Virgin’s is an ecclesiastical parish, formed August 10Th 1869, from the parishes of Strood and Frindsbury; the church, erected in 1869, at the sole expense of Mrs. Griffiths, is a building of stone, in the Early English style, and consists of nave, aisles, transept and south porch and a tower: there are 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1869. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250, with three-quarters of an acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Josias Henry Drew M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 3,971. The poor have £17 3s. 8d. yearly in bread. Young & Pemble's Charity, from which £30 per annum is derived, is for deserving and necessitous persons in the parish. Hulkes and Bulmer’s Charities, producing £98 11s. 8d. are distributed twice yearly by orders on the local tradespeople. The Methodist chapel in Frindsbury road was erected 1813, and will seat 300. The Wesleyan chapel in Frindsbury road, erected in 1889, will seat 850: in 1902 the chapel was renovated and electric light installed at a cost of £700. Zoar (Congregational) chapel, in High street, was erected 1796, and will seat 250 persons. The Salvation Army Barracks, North street, will seat 350 persons. A cemetery of 6 acres, situated on the Cuxton road, was formed in 1883, at a cost of £4,750; it contains two mortuary chapels and a mortuary, and is under the control of a joint committee of 15 members, appointed by the Rochester Urban District Council and the Strood Extra parish meeting, under the “Local Government Act, 1894.”

The Conservative Club, formerly a private residence, was purchased and converted to its present purpose in 1890—1, at a cost of £1,600, as a branch, of the Rochester club; it contains billiard, smoking, reading, card and chess rooms, and a reference and, lending library; Frederick William Walter, hon. sec. Brickmaking is caried on here on a large scale, and there are extensive oilseed crushing mills belonging to Messrs. Stewart Brothers and Spencer (now a branch of the British Oil and Cake Mills Ltd.); a bridge over the Canal road connects their riverside premises with the factory, and there are lines of railway communicating with the South Eastern and Chatham system. The manor was given by Henry II. to the Knights Templars, who had a preceptory at Strood; part of the original building, now called “Temple Farm,” still remains, and is tenanted by George Wood esq. The trustees of Charles Gustavus Whittaker esq. are lords of Temple manor.

The area of Strood Intra is 362 acres of land, 22 of tidal water and 23 of foreshore; rateable value, £37,328; the population in 1901 was 10,006, including 14 officers and 243 inmates in the Union Workhouse.
