Historical Description

STURRY (Stour-eye, the isle of the Stour) is a parish on the north bank of the river Stour, at the point where the Margate and Herne Bay roads from Canterbury diverge, with a station on the Ashford and Ramsgate section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 2 ½ miles north-east from Canterbury, 5 south from Herne Bay station on the Faversham and Margate section of the same railway, and 57 from London (by road); it is in the Eastern division of the county, Bleangate hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division and county court district of Canterbury, Blean union, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Canterbury. Over the Stour is a bridge of one arch, 24 feet span, leading to Fordwich. The village is supplied with water from Canterbury Water works. The church of St. Nicholas is of rubble, in the Early English style, with later insertions, and has a tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the east and several other windows are stained: the church was restored and reseated in 1869, and has 397 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a vicarage, net income £170, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Herbert Perry Brewer M.A. of Queen’s College, Cambridge. Here is St. Anne’s Catholic Convent, with chapel attached, served from Ramsgate. Here are Wesleyan and Baptist chapels. A sum of £16 yearly is derived from the Bigge charities mentioned under Fordwich, the adjoining parish; of this amount £6 is given to six poor parishioners and the remainder is devoted to the apprenticing of poor children of both sexes. Chafy’s charity consists of pensions of 4s. 9d. each to six poor men and six poor women over 50 years of age. The Wotton and other smaller charities are for the education of poor children. Lord Greville is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light loam and heavy clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, roots, fruit and hops. The area is 3,143 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £6,190; the population in 1901 was 1,184.
