Historical Description

SUTTON VALENCE (or Town Sutton) is a village and parish, on the road from Maidstone to Headcorn and Tenterden, 4 miles north-west-by-north from Headcorn station, 6 north-east from Staplehurst station, both on the Tonbridge and Alshford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 6 south-east from Maidstone and 42 from London, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, hundred of Eyhorne, Hollingbourn union, Bearsted petty sessional division, Maidstone county court district, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The village has a thorough system of drainage, and is lighted with gas by a company, formed in 1886, and supplied with water of unusual excellence from works in the parish. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt in 1828 and restored in 1874, is of Kentish ragstone, with Bath stone windows, in the Gothic styles of the 14th and 15th centuries, and has a tower containing one bell: the east window is a memorial: there are 450 sittings, 200 being free. The register dates from the year 1577. The living is a vicarage, with that of East Sutton annexed, joint net yearly value £152, with residence and 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. David Harding M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Congregational chapel, founded in 1740, has 420 sittings. The almshouses, six in number, were, founded by William Lambe about the same time as the school: the inmates must be parishioners, and each receives 7s. weekly and one ton of coals yearly: the houses have been rebuilt by the Cloth workers’ Company. The general charities amount to £15 yearly. Belringham, the residence of Mrs. Southey was built by John Willes esq. celebrated as a cricketer and the first to introduce the system of round-arm bowling. There are still some remains of Sutton Castle, supposed to date from the time of Edward I. Sir Robert Marcus Filmer bart. of 22 Lowndes street, London S W, who is lord of the manor, and the Rev. William Oliver are the chief landowners. The soil is rich loam and stiff clay; the subsoil of the upper part of the parish is rock, and yields, superior golden hops. The area is 2,168 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value £4,886; the population in 1901 was 1,008.

Schools

The Grammar School, founded by William Lambe esq. citizen & clothworker, in 1576, was extended by the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers in 1838 & reerected & further extended in 1864, new buildings, including a laboratory, swimming bath sanatorium, gymnasium & workshop, being added in 1876—7: the foundation admits boys-sons of inhabitants of Sutton Valence, or of the adjoining parishes of Langley, Leeds, Chart, East Sutton & Lenham-who are called Lambe's foundation scholars & are entitled to compete for six exhibitions of £6 each, given by the governors; other day boys & boarders are admitted into the school on terms fixed by the headmaster: the following exhibitions & scholarships are attached to the school:-On leaving school-one exhibition every year of £60 yearly, tenable for three years at Oxford, Cambridge or London University; one exhibition every year of £30 yearly, tenable for three years, either at one of the above universities or other place of higher education; to each of the above is added a sum of £10 when the exhibitioner takes his B.A. degree, and a further sum of £20 if his name appears in any honour list of the final examination; the “Robins” exhibition of £20 yearly is tenable for four years at St. John’s College, Cambridge: entrance scholarships are awarded annually in January by competition: the headmaster gives six scholarships of £12 yearly to sons of clergymen: there are 81 boys, of whom 67 are boarders: the master, wardens & court of assistants of the Company of the Clothworkers are the governors.
