Historical Description

Swanscombe, about three miles from Northfleet, on the left of our road, derives its present name from Suinescamp, as it is written in Domesday book, the Danish king Sweyn having erected a castle here, to preserve a winter station for his ships. This place is also said to be the spot where the march of William the conqueror was impeded by the men of Kent, till he had consented to grant them a full confirmation of all their ancient laws and privileges.

In Swanscombe Church there is an ancient tomb of Sir Ralph Weldon, who was chief clerk of the kitchen to Queen Elizabeth, afterwards clerk comptroller to King James, and died clerk of the green cloth, in November 1609, aged sixty-four. His effigies, and that of his lady, lie upon the tomb, and at their feet a son and a daughter. Three other sons and five daughters are represented kneeling in front of the tomb.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SWANSCOMBE is a parish, extending to the Thames, three-quarters of a mile from Northfleet station on the North Kent section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 west from Gravesend and 4 east from Dartford, in the North Western division of the county, Axton hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Dartford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Gravesend and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a building, chiefly in the Early English style, with a tower and steeple which, on August 13, 1902, was struck by lightning and destroyed, except the chancel: there are monuments to the Weldons, including those of Anthony Weldon, Eleanor, his wife, and on the south side a monument of alabaster with recumbent effigies of their son, Sir Ralph Weldon kt. ob. 1609, a knight in armour and his lady, both resting their heads on pillows; the nave and aisles were restored by the late Sir James Erasmus Wilson LL.D., F.R.S, who formerly lived here, died in 1884, and was buried in the church; a stained window commemorates the restoration, and there are three others. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £415, with 39 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and held since 1889 by the Rev. George Hale M.A. of that College. Here are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, a Congregational chapel at ingress Vale, built in 1860, with 230 sittings, a Baptist meeting room at Milton street, and Salvation Army Barracks. A burial ground of 5 acres was formed in 1885 at a cost of £493, and is under the control of the Parish Council, but there is no mortuary chapel. Beare’s almshouses, founded in 1587 by John Beare, of Greenhithe, for three families, are situated at Greenhithe; the inmates are supported chiefly from a charity left in 1721 by Lady Judith Swan, and endowed with half an acre of land, which is let on building and other leases. The income is about £137 a year; each married couple receives 8s. and each single person 5s. 6d. a week. Swanscombe Wood is well known; and here is a cavern called “Clabbernappers Hole.”

The extensive cement works of The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (1900) Limited at Swanscombe Cross give employment to the greater portion of the working population here. The Ebbsfleet stream was formerly navigable. Swanscombe manor house, an ancient building, and the seat of the Weldon family, is now occupied as a fawn house. Thomas Bevan esq. of Stone Park, near Greenhithe, is lord of the manor; the trustees of the late Samuel Charles Umfreville esq. of Greenhithe (d. 1894), and The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (1900) Limited are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel and chalk; subsoil, chalk. The area is 2,139 acres of land, 2 of water, 359 of tidal water and 58 of foreshore; rateable value of the entire parish, £37,161; the population in 1901 was 6,975, including Galley Hill and Greenhithe.
