The river Dour rises at the western extremity of this parish, and the hills rise on either side of the valley, which is terminated by the town and castle of Dover. This place is called Temple Ewell, from having been part of the possessions of the Knights Templars, and this is still the legal name used in the register. The ancient church of SS. Peter and Paul is of flint, in the Norman, Early English and later styles, and has a tower of rough flints, containing, one bell: the east window is stained: the church was restored in 1874, at a cost of about £2,200, and affords about 300 sittings. Frederic Mann M.A. Cantaur. The impropriate tithe amounts to £221 16s. 11d. Here is a small undenominational mission room. Woodville, the residence and property of Henry Coleman esq. is pleasantly situated at the foot of well-wooded slopes, in a park of 37 acres. Thomas Wright Watson esq. of 60 Great Cumberland Place, London W. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. Sheep are extensively reared. The soil is red loam; subsoil, chalk. The area is 1,597 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £3,036. The population in 1901 was 608.
