Historical Description

Tenterden is situated on an eminence, and is a well-built town, containing many respectable domestic structures. It is a member of the cinque port of Rye, to which it was annexed in the reign of King Henry VI. It was incorporated in the 27th of the same king, and is now governed by a mayor and jurats. The steeple of the Church is remarkably lofty, and is said,by an old and shrewd proverb, to have been the cause of some dangerous sands in the channel, called Goodwin's Sands. According to traditional history, these sands were formerly a tract of ground near the Isle of Thanet, belonging to Goodwin, Earl of Kent, which lying low, were defended from the sea by a great wall, or bank, that required constant care to uphold it. This tract was afterwards given to St. Austin's monastery, near Canterbury, and the abbot neglecting the wall, while he was engaged in building Tenterden steeple, the sea broke in, and overflowed the ground, leaving the sands upon it. It is now a bank that runs parallel to the shore, about a league and a half from it, and near three leagues in length; at low water it is dry, and by breaking the force of the sea on the southwest and southeast, makes the Downs a better road than it would be without it; yet ships have been frequently lost upon it, when the wind blowed hard at southeast, east by north, or east northeast.

Till within these few years, there hung a beacon, almost a singular instance remaining of one, over the top of Tenterden steeple. It was a sort of iron kettle, holding about a gallon, with a ring or hoop of the same metal round the upper part of it, to hold still more coals, rosin, &c It was hung at the end of a piece of timber about eight feet long. The church is a large and handsome building, containing numerous sepulchral memorials.

An ancestor of the family of Heyman, of Somerfield, many years since founded a Free School in this town, for teaching the Latin tongue, gratis, to so many poor children of this parish as the mayor and jurats should think proper. This is one of the neglected foundations which demand public and careful inquiry.

The weekly market is on Friday.

Tenterden was one of the first places in which the woollen manufacture was established, in the reign of Edward III.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

TENTERDEN is a municipal borough, market town, a limb of the Cinque Port and liberty of Rye (Sussex) and the head of a, union and county court district and parish, giving its name to the hundred, in the Southern division of the county, lathe of Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division and in the rural deanery of West Charing and archdeaconry of Maidstone, with a station, 1 ½ miles south-west of the town, called Rolvenden Road, on the Rother Valley railway, which is connected with the South Eastern and Chatham railway at Roberts bridge. A new station, to be called Tenterden Town station on the Rother Valley railway, will be opened in 1903. The town is 7 miles west-by-north from Appledore station on the Rye and Hastings branch and 9 south-east from Headcorn station on the main line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 18 south-east from Maidstone, 12 south-west from Ashford, 8 south-east from Cranbrook, 10 north-west from Rye and 53 from London. The borough includes part of Ebony. The town is lighted with gas supplied by a company, established in 1838, and has a good supply of water procured from springs, pipes for the supply of water to the town having been laid down by the Cranbrook Water Co. Tenterden possesses all the privileges of the Cinque Ports and received a charter of incorporation from Henry VI. and a new charter was granted 42 Elizabeth (1599—1600): it is a member of the ancient town of Rye and at the time of its annexation by Henry VI. the sea flowed up to the parish at Small Hythe. The Corporation consists of a mayor, four aldermen and twelve councillors. The borough has a commission of the peace and a separate court of quarter sessions held before the recorder. This place gave the title of baron to Sir Charles Abbott kt. Chief Justice of the King’s Bench, who was created Baron Tenterden of Hendon, Middlesex, 30 April, 1827, and the title is still extant. The church of St. Mildred is of stone in the Early English and later styles, and has a Perpendicular tower containing a clock and 8 bells: there are eight stained windows, and a fine marble monument to Herbert Whitfield, of Tenterden, 1622: the church affords 798 sittings, 20 of which are held by faculty. The register dates from the year 1544. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £237, with residence and 3 acres of glebe and £70 from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for a curate, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Samuel Campbell Lepard M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford, and chaplain of Tenterden union and surrogate. The diversion of the funds for the maintenance of the sea walls on the Goodwin to the building of Tenterden church is said to have been the origin of a proverb as to the influence of Tenterden steeple in causing the Goodwin sands. There are Wesleyan, Baptist and Unitarian chapels; attached to the latter is a burial ground. A small cemetery of 3a. 2r. 27p. situated on the Cranbrook road, without mortuary chapel, was formed in 1884, and is under the control of a burial board of nine members. The Town Hall, erected in 1792, stands on the north side of High street: here the county court, quarter sessions and other meetings are held; the hall, used for concerts and lectures, will hold 250 persons. There is an annual fair held on the first Monday in May for cattle and wool and a lamb fair on the first Friday in September. Summer Hill is the seat of Mrs. Wilkin; Homewood, of Joseph Skelding esq. Heronden Hall is the seat of Lieut. Vivian T. Dampier Palmer. Heronden is the seat of Mrs. Peel; Hales Place, the residence of Edmund Henry Hardcastle esq. and Kench Hill of W. R. M. Milne esq. Westwell, the residence of J. Hay-Edwards esq. rebuilt in 1711, is a fine example of the architecture of the Queen Anne period. The manorial rights are held by the Corporation, as lessees under the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, who are the lords. The principal landowners are Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Gordon, W. P. Pomfret esq. of Morghew, Richard Neeve and J. D. Norton esqrs. Frank Morrison esq. of Farmwood, Ascot, Albert Dixon esq. and J. Hay-Edwards esq. The generality of the land is pasture, above 200 acres consisting of hop plantations. The area of the parish is 8,925 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £16,937; the population of the municipal borough in 1901 was 3,243, and 9 officers and 129 inmates in the workhouse; the population attached to the parish church in 1901 was 2,274.
