Historical Description
TESTON is a village and parish, on the north bank of the navigable Medway (over which is a bridge of five arches on the road from Teston to West Flarlteigh), 1 mile north-north-east from. Wateringbury station on the Rochester and Tonbridge line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 south-west from Maidstone and 40 from London by rail, 31 by road, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Twyford hundred, Maidstone union and county court district, petty sessional division of Mailing, rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. Barham Court, in this parish, has given the title of baron to the Middleton family, subsequently transferred, by marriage to the Noel family, and now held by the Earl of Gainsborough. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a small cruciform building of stone, and has a tower, with spire, containing 3 bells; the church was rebuilt about 1710, and reconstructed about 1846; there are modern brasses and a monument, and other memorials to former possessors of Barham Court; the church affords 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with residence and 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lady Victoria Buxton, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Francis George Olyphant. The local charities and annual contributions for the support of the poor amount to £62 10s. Barham Court, the property of Roger Leigh esq. of 70 Courtfield gardens, Kensington W. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is in the occupation of Col. Charles Edward Warde M.P., J.P.; during the earlier part of the 19th century the mansion was a favourite resort of the distinguished statesman and philanthropist, William Wilberforce esq. M.P. and Mrs. Hannah More, the well-known authoress, and one of the first Sundays schools established was begun in this parish by Mrs. More. Remains of a Roman cemetery were met with during the building of the schools, and the remains of a Roman villa, discovered in one of the hop gardens, were excavated by the late W. A. Fremlin esq. by whom a description of these relics has been published. The soil is red sandy loam; subsoil, Kentish rag stone. Hops and fruit are grown in abundance here. The area is 512 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £2,175; the population in 1901 was 286.
