Historical Description

THROWLEY is a parish, adjacent to the road from Faversham to Ashford, situated on high ground, in a picturesque country, 5 miles south of Faversham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 44 from London by road, in the North Eastern division of the county, lathe of Scray, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Faversham, and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. This place bestows the title of Viscount on the Monson family, Earls Sondes. The church of St. Michael and All Angels, situated on high ground, is of flint, chiefly in the Decorated style, but retaining some Norman and Early English portions, and a tower containing 6 bells, presented in 1780 by Col. John Montresor of Belmont: there are some fragments of a stained window, erected by Alice Marten, widow (nee Sondes), in 1545; and monuments to the Harris and Sondes families. The church was repaired in 1804, at a cost of £450, and in 1866 the upper stage of the tower was rebuilt and the church restored and repewed. There are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £232, with residence and 25 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Francis Orton. There are three almshouses for the relief of aged persons, founded by an ancestor of Lord Sondes; each inmate lives Tent free and has a small allowance of coals. Belmont, a noble mansion, built in 1769, and charmingly situated in an extensive park of 500 acres graced with numerous groups of forest trees, is the seat of Lord Harris G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., D.L., J.P. governor of Bombay 1889-94, an extensive landowner in this county, and well known as one of the foremost of English cricketers. Throwley House, seated amid foliage, opposite Sheldwich church and surrounded with lawns, is the seat of Herbert Hordern esq. J.P. The manors belong to Earl Sondes and Lord Harris, who are the principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and turnips. Hops are extensively grown here. The area is 3,256 acres; rateable value, £2,618; the population in 1901 was 507.

Hockley Hole is a quarter of a mile west; Throwley Forstal is a hamlet 1 mile south; Wilgate Green and Wilderton, 1 mile north; Tong Green, 1 ½ miles south; Snoad Street, 2 ½ miles south on the road to Charing.

National School (mixed), built in 1872, for 110 children; average attendance, 90.
