Historical Description

THURNHAM, or Thornham, is a parish from 2 to 4 miles north-east from Maidstone, the church being about half a mile east of the road from Maidstone to Sittingbourne and 1 ¼ miles from Bearsted station, on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, the parish is in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Eyhorn, lathe of Aylesford, Maidstone county court district, Bearsted petty sessional division, Hollingbourne union, Sutton rural deanery, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is of stone, in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing a clock and 3 bells: there are two memorial windows: the church affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a vicarage, consolidated in the 16th century with the rectory of Aldington, joint net income £180, with 13 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. Percy F. Wigan M.A. of Puckrup Hall, Tewkesbury, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Stephen Rookherst Wigan M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. On the top of a chalk hill, about half a mile from the church and near the ancient Pilgrims’ road from Winchester to Canterbury, are the ruins of Thurnham (or Godard’s) Castle, a fortress supposed to have been originally Norman work. Turnham Court is the residence of Mrs. Hampson. Aldington Court is the property of Miss Lushington and the residence of Henry Lushington esq. Sir George Francis Hampson bart. of 62 Stanhope gardens, London S.W. who is lord of the manor and lay rector, Mrs. Knight, Augustus Harbord esq. and Miss Lushington, of Park house, Sandling, are the chief landowners. The soil in the upper part of the parish is chalky and light, but below of a richer character. The chief crops are hops, wheat, fruit and Toots; there are a great many acres of woodland. The area is 3,400 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £4,174; the population in 1901 was 579 in the civil parish and 560 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 20,930, dated Mar. 24, 1889, Chrismell Farm and Milgate House and cottages were transferred from Bearsted to this parish.

National School (mixed), built in 1872, for 110 children; average attendance, 89.
