Historical Description

ULCOMBE is a parish and village, 4 miles north from Headcorn station on the Tonbridge and Ashford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 8 south-east from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, Eyhorne and Faversham hundreds, Aylesford and Scray lathes, Maidstone county court district, Bearsted petty sessional division, Hollingbourne union, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. A tributary of the Beuilt waters the parish. The church of All Saints, formerly attached to a college founded here in 1226 by Archbishop Langton and dissolved about 1300, is of Kentish rag in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there are brasses with effigies and a monument to a former Marquess and Marchioness of Ormonde: the church was restored in 1870 and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £530, with 87 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Ormonde, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Lord James Theobald Bagot John Butler M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Ulcombe Place, the property of the Marquess of Ormonde K.P., P.C. who is lord of the manor, is now the residence of Alfred Osten Walker esq. The Marquess of Ormonde, Sir Robert Marcus Filmer bart. of 22 Lowndes street, London S.W. Cornwallis Philip Wykeham-Martin esq. of Leeds Castle and the Stringer family are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy, gravel and Kentish ragstone; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat and superior hops and fruit. The area is 3,512 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £3,874; the population in 1901 was 622.

Pye Corner and Eastwood are one mile south; Great and Little Boy Court, 3 ½ miles south; a tributary of the Beuilt passes Great Boy Court; Fairborne Heath 1 ½ miles north-east, is in this parish.

Church of England School, built in 1820, for 101 children; average attendance, 98.
