Historical Description
UPPER HARDRES (or Great Hardres) is a parish adjoining Lower Hardres to the south about 3 miles south-west from Bishopsbourne station on the Elham Valley line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 5 south from Canterbury in the Eastern division of the county; the chief part is in upper half-hundred of Bridge and the remainder in that of Loningborough, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division of Home, Bridge union, Canterbury county court district, rural deanery of West Bridge and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is of flint and Stone, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing 3 bells: there is some ancient stained glass and several brasses to the family of Hardres and Street, besides other ancient memorials: the church affords 150 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1566; burials, 1565; marriages, 1567. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Stelling annexed, joint net yearly value £360, with residence and 45 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of Mrs. Sandys Lumsdaine, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Walter Sydenham Clarke. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. Mrs. Taswell, who is lady of the manor, George Marshall esq. J.P. of Hardres Court, and Wilfred Baker White esq. of Street End, are the principal landowners. The soil is partly heavy loam and partly light loam; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops. The area is 2,036 acres; assessable value, £1,380; the population in 1901 was 310.
