Historical Description

WALTHAM (styled in ancient records Temple Waltham, from the Knights Templars having been formerly possessors of the same) is a village and parish, 5 miles east from Wye station, on the Ashford and Canterbury branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 7 miles south from Canterbury and 10 north-east from Ashford, in the Eastern division of the county, lathes of St. Augustine and Shepway, hundreds of Bridge and Petham and of Stowting, Home petty sessional division, union of Bridge, Canterbury county court district and in the rural deanery of West Bridge and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Bartholomew is of flint and brick; some portions may possibly be Norman, but other features are of Decorated and Perpendicular character: the tower, standing between the nave and chancel, contains 4 bells: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, annexed in 1698 to that of Petham, joint net yearly value £280, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir John William Honywood bart. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Frederick William Gilbert Sidebotham M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who resides at Petham. The Wesleyan chapel here was erected in 1887. Sir John William Honywood bart. of Evington Place, is lord of the manor, and Henry Ramsay Mackay esq. of Petham House, and John Cunliffe Kay esq. of Godmersham Park, are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, peas, beans, oats and hops. The area is 3,234 acres; assessable value, £1,658; population in 1901 was 345.

By Local Government Board Order 23,643, dated March 24, 1889, a detached part of this parish was transferred to Hastingleigh, in East Ashford union.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 12 Dec. 1873; T. Vickers, hon. clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), opened November, 1875, for 104 children; average attendance, 57.
