Historical Description
WAREHORNE is a parish and village, 1 mile south-west from Ham Street station on the Ashford and Hastings line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway and 7 south from Ashford, in the Southern division of the county, partly in the liberty of Romney Marsh, Ham, Aloesbridge and Blackborne hundreds, lathes of Scray and Shepway, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, East Ashford union and in the rural deanery of South Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The Royal Military Canal passes through the parish. The church of St. Matthew is of rough stone and flint, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower, partly rebuilt in 1777, and containing 5 bells: there is a memorial to John Coventry, ob. 1681, and a brass to Thomas Ickyn, a former rector, ob. 1483: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1727. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £203, with 42 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Crickmer Battiscombe. Here is a Bible Christian chapel. A fair was formerly held yearly on the 2nd and 3rd of October for toys and pedlery. Lord Hothfield and Sir Henry Nevill Dering bart. K.C.M.G., C.B. are lords of the manors. The principal landowners are Edmund W. and Roderic Oliver esqrs. of Burnt Oak, Orlestone. The soil is mould; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas and oats. The area is 2,918 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £2,912; the population in 1901 was 346 in the civil and 356 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Ham Green is 1 mile south-east, in Romney Marsh.
Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act,” part of Ham Street has been transferred from Warehorne to Orlestone, and a detached part of the latter added to its former parish.
Board School (under the Orlestone, Warehorne & Kennardington united district board), built, with master’s residence, in 1875, for 120 children; average attendance, 65.
