Historical Description

Six miles from Maidstone is Mailing, or Town Mailing, also called West Mailing (to distinguish it from the village of East Mailing). It is seated near a rivulet that runs into the Medway. A small Free School was founded in this parish by Francis Tresse, gentleman, in the year 1632. There was formerly a Nunnery here, founded in the time of William Rufus, by Gundulph, bishop of Rochester. This structure was nearly destroyed by fire, together with the whole town, in the reign of Richard I. The nuns, however, speedily restored it, with the assistance of contributions from pious persons. It is situated at the east end of the town, and is approached by a venerable and ancient gateway. Although the house itself was almost entirely pulled down and rebuilt by Mr. Honey wood, yet many of the ancient buildings and offices belonging to it are still remaining, and are used as appendages to the present residence. A handsome tower of the church, the front of which is decorated with intersecting arches, and zigzag ornaments similar to those on the west front of Rochester Cathedral, is still preserved.

The parish-church of Town Mailing is a large and handsome fabric, having a Norman tower with pilasters at the West end : the nave has been chiefly rebuilt since the year 1778, when the whole roof fell in, through the decay of the main columns.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WEST MALLING is a parish and large village, known as Town Mailing, a quarter of a mile south of the road from London to Maidstone, head of a union and petty sessional division, with a station on the Sevenoaks and Maidstone branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 12 miles east from Sevenoaks, 6 west from Maidstone and 34 from London, in the Mid division of the county, West Mailing hundred, county court district of Maidstone, lathe of Aylesford, North Mailing rural deanery, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. It is lighted with gas from works in the village, the property of the Mid-Kent Gas and Coke Co. Ltd. established in 1853, and an adequate supply of water was laid on by the Mid-Kent Water Company in 1890. During the period 1884—90, a system of drainage and sewerage has been carried out by the Rural Sanitary Authority on the farm irrigation system, at a cost of about £7,000. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone, partly in the Norman and Early English styles, but in 1780 a nave was built in the Italian style: in 1901 this nave was pulled down with the exception of part of the east and west walls and a new nave and aisles were erected at a cost of about £5,000, from designs by J. T. Micklethwaite esq. F.S.A.: there is a tower with spire containing a clock and 8 bells, and a monument to Sir Robert Brett kt. 1620: the church affords 500 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1698; marriages and burials from 1700. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £291, with residence, in the gift of the representatives of the late W. Lawson esq. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Arthur William Lawson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Misses Savage are the impropriators of the great tithes. The ancient almonry chapel, which stands by the abbey gateway, is Perpendicular, with portions of Decorated work: it has been restored, and daily services are held in it. The chaplaincy, in the gift of the Mission Fathers of Cowley St. John, Oxford, has been held since 1901 by the Rev. Cecil Huntley Berry Assoc. K.C.L.; the Rev. Mother, Miss Stewart, is in charge. There is a Baptist chapel in Swan street, built in 1837, and has 270 sittings. The Mailing division of the county constabulary have their head quarters here; and a police station, with magistrates’ room, was erected in 1866. A fair is held on the 17th of November.

The Kent Nursing Institution, established in 1875, is carried on in two houses adjoining the vicarage house, and is under the management of a committee, of which the Countess Dowager of Aylesford is president; nurses are supplied from the institution for sick persons of every class throughout the county of Kent: its present annual income is about £5,000, which is in part derived from payments made by persons who employ the nurses and partly from subscriptions. A branch establishment was opened at Tunbridge Wells, in November, 1888. Here also is a private asylum for the care and treatment of the insane of both sexes belonging to the upper and middle classes; James Adam M.D. resident medical superintendent. On the outskirts of the town is the old County Cricket ground, now maintained by the Tovm Mailing cricket club. At West Mailing was formerly a Benedictine nunnery, founded by King Edmund in 944, and refounded by Bishop Gundulph in 1090, some of the buildings of which are still standing, the principal feature being the very fine Norman tower: the buildings are now the property of and occupied by a Benedictine Sisterhood in communion with the Church of England: the late Early English cloister, with the south transept of the church, restored by the Sisterhood for use as a private chapel, the gateway, the almonry chapel and some of the domestic buildings also remain. About a quarter of a mile south of the church, and close to the Tonbridge road, stands the famous Leonard’s Tower, built by Bishop Gundulph almost immediately after the Conquest, and believed by antiquaries to be the earliest Norman keep in existence. There are several charities-Sir Robert Brett kt. who died in 1620, gave by will £26 a year for providing a weekly lecture, and the same amount for weekly distribution to 20 poor persons; the Rev. George Feme Bates, rector here from 1815, and who died in 1841, bequeathed the interest of £500, leas legacy duty, to the support of the National Boys' School and the interest of £250 for providing coals for the poor at a reduced rate. The Misses Savage, who own the manorial rights, Viscount Falmouth Col. Everard Thomas Luck, and R. Mercer esq. of Rodmersham House, Sittingbourne, are the principal landowners. The. area is 1,375 acres of land (of which 160 are planted with hops) and 4 of water; rateable value, £9,820; the population in 1901, 2,312, including 20 officers and 199 inmates of the Union house and 58 in West Mailing Place Private Asylum.

To the south of the Mailings extends a belt of wood and heath seven miles long, by two or three miles wide, under the names of East Mailing Woods, Merewortn Woods and Great Comp Woods.
