Historical Description

WEST WICKHAM (the prefix of “West” having been given to distinguish it from the two other parishes named Wickham in this county) is a large parish and village, pleasantly situated on the borders of Surrey, with a station on the Beckenham and Hayes branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 12 miles from London, 3 ½ south-west from Bromley, 4 south-east from Croydon and 2 ½ south from Beckenham, in the Western division of the county of Kent, Metropolitan police district, Ruxley hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Croydon and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. John the Baptist is in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing 5 bells: there is a wooden screen coeval with the fabric; some fine remains of old glass, several monuments to the Lennard, Hobbs, Farnaby and Cator families, five memorial windows, and two brasses: in 1889 the church was re-seated and rearranged, and affords 220 sittings. The earliest register bears date 1558. The living is a rectory, net income £200, with residence and 33 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Sir J. F. Lennard bart. (d. 1899), and held since 1884 by the Rev. Harry Bertie Roberts M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The chapel of ease in Wickham Street, formerly an infants’ school, was converted for ecclesiastical purposes at a cost of about £1,000, defrayed by L. Loyd esq. of Monks Orchard, and has 200 sittings There is also a Congregational chapel. The parochial lending library consists of nearly 400 volumes. A charity of £3 annual value, left by Lady Slaney, and payable by the Grocers’ Company, is for apprenticing poor decayed tradesmen’s sons; there is also a charity of £3 annually, left by the late Samuel Lennard esq. to be distributed to the poor of Wickham, Keston, Hayes and Farnborough on the 5th of Nov. West Wickham Common, about 25 acres in extent, was purchased in 1892 for a sum of £3,000, and opened to the public 12 Nov. 1892. Wickham Court, a noble castellated building, standing in grounds of 11 acres, is the seat of Major Sir Henry Arthur Hallam Farnaby Lennard bart. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor. Wickham Hall is the residence of Gustav Mellin esq. The principal landowners are Major Sir H. A. H. F. Lennard bart. and Charles Emanuel Goodhart esq. of Langley Park. The soil is gravelly loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,657 acres; rateable value, £10,375; the population in 1901 was 1,328.
