Historical Description

WESTERHAM is a market town and parish, situated on rising ground, on the Surrey border and on the road from Sevenoaks to Godstone, with a terminal station on a branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway from Dunton Green, 5 ¾ miles north from Edenbridge station on the Redhill and Tonbridge section of the same line, 6 ½ west from Sevenoaks and 21 from London. The parish is in the Western division of the county, Westerham and Edenbridge hundreds, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Sevenoaks petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Shoreham, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury; it extends northward to the summit of the chalk hills, where it is bounded by Cudham, and southward beyond the sand hills into the Weald. The river Darent takes its rise in this parish at a small distance from Squerryes. The town is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1885, and supplied with water by the Kent Water Works Co. Limited from the Knockholt reservoir, which has a capacity of 65,000 gallons, and from a well at Westerham, from which the water is pumped to the mains by a water mill on the Squerryes estate. The church of St. Mary is of stone in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 8 bells: there are brasses with effigies and several stained windows, and a chalice dated 1556; the interior has been re-seated, and was restored in 1883 at a cost of £6,000: the church affords 600 sittings, 140 being free. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £372, with residence, in the gift of Major John Board, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Sydney Le Mesurier M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1839, with 180 sittings, and an Open Brethren chapel. Westerham. Public Hall, which belongs to Lieut.-Col. Warde, is a building in the Tudor style, erected at a total cost, including furniture, of about £2,000, includes a large hall capable of holding 300 persons and a billiard room, together with rooms for the housekeeper; the committees of various benevolent societies meet here. In the market place stands a granite drinking fountain, erected by subscription 1887. The market, granted in the 25th of Edward III. (1351—2) to the Abbot of Westminster, who possessed the manor, is held every Wednesday at the King’s Arms hotel and a cattle fair on the 3rd of May. The H. Company of 1st Volunteer Battalion Queen’s Own West Kent Regiment hare headquarters in the town. Dr. Benjamin Hoadley, successively bishop of Bangor, Hereford, Salisbury and Winchester, was born here Nov. 14, 1676, and this was also the birthplace, Jan. 15, 1726, of General James Wolfe, the victor of Quebec (Sept. 13, 1759); Westerham was also the birthplace, in 1503, of John Frith the martyr, burned at Smithfield in the reign of Henry VIII. July 4, 1533. The charities are of an annual value of £25. A block of 12 almshouses was erected in 1874 by Miss Moreton, one of the sisterhood of Clewer, near Windsor, at; a cost of £9,000; each house is endowed with a weekly allowance of 5s. 6d. each to single inmates and 8s. to married persons. There are also about 4 acres of allotments. Squerryes Court, the seat of Lieut.— Col. Charles Arthur Madan Warde D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a noble building of the 16th century and has a spacious entrance hall containing some fine paintings; on the staircase and in the picture gallery is hung a splendid collection of family portraits and other paintings; fronting the south-western entrance is a lake, supplied from springs in the park. Valence, the seat of Norman Watney esq. J.P. stands in thickly-timbered grounds, watered by natural springs, which form a tributary of the river Darent. Dunsdale, the residence of Francis John Johnson esq. is pleasantly situated on a wooded eminence. The adjoining grounds are tastefully laid, out and are watered by natural springs which form a picturesque lake. Farley is the residence of Major John Board V.D., D.L., J.P. The Old Manor House is the residence of Henry Hugh Powell Cotton esq. Lieut.-Col. C. A. M. Warde, N. Watney esq. and Major Board are the principal landowners. The soil is friable, loam and various; subsoil, gravelly or Kentish rag and various. The area is 5,787 acres of land and 17 of water; assessable value, £13,575; the population in 1901 was 2,905 civil; ecclesiastical, 2,304.

National, for 150 boys, 160 girls & 120 infants; average attendance, 140 boys, 90 girls & 116 infants. The girls’ & infants’ school was built in 1860 & enlarged in 1890 at a cost of £1,000, and the boys’ school, Hosey Common, built in 1828, was enlarged in 1872 & re-enlarged in 1900, for 190 boys, at a cost of £500.
