Historical Description

Westwell Church is a respectable building, and consists of a nave, chancel, and aisles, with a tower at the west end, surmounted by a shingled spire.

The pillars on each side the middle aisle are slender and beautiful, and between this aisle and the chancel they are remarkably elegant. In the middle window of the high chancel there are some remains of painted glass, being four ovals, in each a figure sitting, crowned and bearing a sceptre richly ornamented.

WESTWELL is a village and parish one mile north from Hothfield station on the Ashford and Maidstone branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and which is situated in this parish, 5 miles west from Wye station on the Ashford and Margate section of the same system, and 3 ½ north from Ashford, in the Southern division of the county, lathe of Scray, Calehill and Wyehundreds, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, West Ashford union, rural deanery of East Charing, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary is an ancient and very interesting structure of flint is the Early English and later styles, and has a tower with spire containing 4 bells; the most curious and beautiful feature is the lofty triple-arched chancel screen, dating from 1250; there is some remarkable stained glass, probably unique in England, exhibiting the arms of Anne of Bohemia, wife of Richard II., and of Edward the Confessor and his queen, the daughter of Godwin, Earl of Kent; the east window has three equal lancets, entirely filled with ancient glass of the richest colouring, and there is a modern stained window, and three monumental slabs: the church was restored in 1884 at a cost of £2,200, and affords 280 sittings, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £281, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Henry Honywood D’ombrain B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and chaplain of the West Ashford workhouse, in this parish. The Wesleyans and Baptists have each a chapel here. The principal landowners are Lord Hothfield, who is lord of the manor, and Lord Gerard. The soil is various; subsoil, gravel, chalk and loam. The chief crops are wheat, beans and hops. The area is 5,214 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £4,998; the population in 1901 was 926, including 12 officers and 131 inmates in the West Ashford workhouse.

West Ashford Union Workhouse, renovated in 1902, at a cost of £5,000, is a structure of brick, for 240 inmates & containing an infirmary for 60 patients. & a school for 33 children.

National School (mixed), built in 1830, for 70 children; average attendance, 43.
