Historical Description

WILLESBOROUGH is a large and populous village and parish, pleasantly situated on the high road from Ashford to Hythe, 1 ½ miles south-east from Ashford station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 9 ½ north-west from Hythe and 57 from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Chart and Longbridge, lathe of Scray, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, East Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. A small but nameless tributary of the Stour flows past Swatfield Bridge. The church of St. Mary is of stone in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower with spire containing 6 bells and a clock with two dials, erected in 1887 at a cost of £162: there are three stained windows and memorial tablets to the Perkins family: the church was restored and the north aisle added in 1868, at a cost of over £3,000: it affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £227, including 5 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Thomas Featherston Dixon M.A. of Christs College, Cambridge and rural dean of North Lympne. Christ church is a building of stone, erected in 1874 by the late Joseph Foster esq. in the Early English style, and has a turret with one bell. A Baptist chapel is now (1902) in course of erection at a cost of £565, including site. A cemetery of about 3 acres was formed in 1882, and is under the control of the Parish Council, acting as a burial board. The old National school, enlarged in 1897 at a cost of £100, in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, is used as a Sunday school, and for general church purposes. The charities, which exceed £19 yearly, are derived from land, a cottage, and the interest of £100, left by Joan Masters, David Ladd and and Henry Cook, of Willesborough. In this parish stands the East Ashford union workhouse. East Ashford Rural District infectious Diseases Hospital, in two blocks, was built in 1886 and 1901, at a cost of £1,500, for 18 inmate. The ancient house opposite the church once belonged to the family of William Harvey M.D. the discoverer, about 1628, of the circulation of the blood. Lord Gerard is lord of the manor, Capt. John Wyndham Billington, of Kennington, the trustees of the late Mrs. Warton, of Kernsdale House, Faversham, and J. W. Crookes esq. of Waterloo crescent, Dover, are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, loamy. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas, hops, and some pasture. The area is 1,472 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value. £14,473; the population in 1901 was 3,602, including 11 officers and 106 inmates in the East Ashford workhouse.

A School Board of 7 members was formed Oct. 30, 1871, with Hinxhill & Sevington as contributory districts each sending 2 members; Frederick Hughes Hallett, 11 Bank street, Ashford, clerk to the board; Benjamins Cordery, Willesborough, attendance officer.

Board School (boys, girls & infants), built, with master’s residence, in 1873, & enlarged in 1882, for 150 boys, 150 girls & 180 infants; average attendance, 112 boys, 118 girls & 110 infants.
