The parish is surrounded by gardens and orchards. The church of St. Michael, standing on the summit of a hill, near the high road, is, for the most part in the Perpendicular style, and has a western tower with spire containing 3 bells: the south aisle, added at a cost of about £1,200, was consecrated by the late Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. A. C. Tait, 2 Nov. 1881: there are several memorial windows: in 1883 the chancel was rebuilt with the addition of side chapels, vestries and organ chamber, from plans by Mr. Ewan Christian, architect, at a cost of about £2,000, and consecrated 17 Nov. 1884, by the Bishop of Dover: in the course of the alterations several interesting discoveries were made; at the west end of the nave there are now exposed two undoubtedly Saxon windows; the original Saxon font, which was lying in the churchyard, has been restored to its place, and a Perpendicular holy water stoup, formerly in the south porch, has been placed in the sanctuary as a piscina; there are about 400 sittings, of which nearly 300 are free. A lych gate wag erected by Sir James Whitehad bart. in 1897, in commemoration of the 60th year of Her late Majesty’s reign. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1694; marriages, 1685; burials, 1683. The Retreat here for aged governesses, consists of five cottages, given by F. C. Capel esq. to the Benevolent Fund of the Stock Exchange, and each containing two rooms; there is no money payment to the inmates; the cottages are prettily surrounded by well-kept gardens, and the whole is under the sole control of the owners.
