Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WINGHAM is a considerable village and parish and the head of a petty sessional division, on a small brook, a feeder of the Little Stour, and on the road from Canterbury to Sandwich, 2 miles north from Adisham station on the Faversham and Dover line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 6 east from Canterbury, 6 south-west from Sandwich, and 62 from London. It is in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, hundred of its own name, union of Eastry, Sandwich county court district, and in the rural deanery of East Bridge, and archdeaconry of Canterbury. It was once a market town, but the market, granted by Henry III. has long since fallen into disuse. The village is supplied with water from works, completed in 1891, by the sanitary authorities of Eastry Union, the supply being primarily derived from Dambridge spring; the reservoir has a capacity of 20,000 gallons. The parish church of St. Mary the Virgin is of flint, with some admixture of stone, chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 8 bells: all the original stalls, with their misereres, remain: there are some fine monuments: the church was partially restored in 1875, and has 360 sittings, 150 being free. The register of baptisms dates from 1568; marriages and burials, 1569. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with residence, in the gift of Henry Fitzwalter Plumptre esq. J.P. and held since 1891 by the Rev. Joseph Makinson Fox B.A. of the University of London. The great tithes, amounting to £991, are held by five different owners. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1835 by the late Samuel Toomer esq. and restored in 1885 at a cost of about £400, has sittings for 300. The Drill Hall of the 1 Co. of the 1st Volunteer Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), was formerly a Wesleyan chapel. In July, 1881, during excavation in a meadow near the bridge, some remains of a Roman villa were uncovered, including three mosaic floors, one having decoration of the Greek key pattern. This place gives the title of Baron Cowper of Wingham to the Cowper family, Earls Cowper. Henry de Wingham, a person highly favoured by Henry III. and a native of this parish, was Bishop of London, 1259—63. Sir Percy D. N. Dixwell-Oxenden bart. who is lord of the manor, Earl Cowper K.G., P.C. and Henry Fitzwalter Plumptre esq. J.P. of Goodnestone Park, are the chief landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay.
