Historical Description

WORTH is a parish and village about a mile and a half south from Sandwich station, on the Margate and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway. The parish extends to the sea shore, and is in the Eastern division of the county, Eastry hundred and union, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Sandwich county court district, and in the rural deanery of Sandwich and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient structure of rough flint in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 3 bells: the chancel was restored in 1864 by the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury: there are 240 sittings. The register dates from the year 1726. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with 8 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Francis Douglas Hodgson M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury are the impropriators of the rectorial tithes, commuted yearly value £623 4s. 6 ½d. Here are two coastguard stations. Upton House is the residence of William E. Napier, and has grounds of 16 acres. The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury are lords of the manor, the Earl of Guilford is the principal landowner, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and George M. Goodson esq. are also landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and vegetables.

The area is 3,983 acres of land, 5 of water, 43 of tidal water and 1,071 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,327; the population in 1901 was 536, including the coastguard stations.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 29 Dec. 1871; William Robert Harrison, Potter street, Sandwich, clerk to the board; W. C. Page, Sandwich, attendance officer.
